And for those of us who feel kind of awkward posting that new Loewe bag on Instagram, there is now Snapchat, where shameless self-promotion can be subdued via a few cleverly placed emojis! In the moments that we aren’t posting, we are watching (read: stalking), observing, and building a bizarre viral fascination with people we have never met in person. While I understand that this is the name of the game, it occasionally scares me when my New York friends know what color Gucci loafers Chiara Ferragni has in her closet. This is a phenomenon I never really encountered in my years of living in Paris. And so I wondered: Is it just that I never noticed, or is it possible that our social media epidemic somehow bypassed the trend-resilient French, kind of like ’80s fitness-mania and athleisure?

Today at the Fall 2019 Marques ‘ Almeida show in London, women paraded down the runway in all manner of XXL ensembles, ranging from long and lean zip-up sweatshirts to oversize hoodies that fell to the knee. The one thing the models had in common? Most of them weren’t wearing any pants. And to be honest, they didn’t need to be. Thanks to the likes of Rihanna and Kendall Jenner, the idea of leaving your trousers at home feels totally tangible—dare we say, freeing!—just so long as the proportions and the styling is right.

When it comes to bringing glamour to the red carpet, no one does it better than Naomi Campbell. It’s rare to see a big chunky sweater at Narciso Rodriguez, as we did when the second model out emerged in hand-knit black cashmere with a wrap neckline and an asymmetrical hem. Rodriguez is an exacting tailor; his jackets are precision instruments, engineered for a perfect fit. It means that his clothes are quite formal in tone—you don’t wear Narciso to Sunday brunch with the girls. Or at least, you didn’t until now. Rodriguez showed his sweater with an asymmetrical hem silk skirt, but paired with vintage Levi’s it could be just the thing for your weekly ritual green juice and avocado toast.

Michael Kors has always kept things consistent when it comes to his branding. Try as you may, you will never find a piece of Kors imagery that could ever be described as grungy, or weird, or anything less than aspirational and luxurious. The brand’s focus on glamour and excitement has resulted in a constant stream of imagery featuring yachts, Gulfstream planes, vintage cars, and, more often than not, the presence of a staggeringly beautiful blonde. Over the years, names like Sasha Pivovarova and Vanessa Moody have appeared in the designer’s campaigns, but when it comes to the definitive Kors women, it all goes back to two: Carmen Kass and Karmen Pedaru. Need to Know: After facing tumult in her own life head-on last year, for her sophomore NYFW outing, designer Claudia Li riffed on the idea of self-preservation, of rebirth in the face of hardship. Boasting a background in fine arts, and having cut her teeth as the womenswear designer at J.W.Anderson, New Zealand–raised Li’s minimalism is of a warm stripe. Fall finds her embracing styles with varying sorts of cocoon-like appeal: wide strips of fabric, knotted to armor-like effect; belled sweater cuffs; deep, sculptural folds. If on paper those ideas sound heavy, make no mistake: Li’s got a beautiful eye for lightness. One voile shirtdress you could see becoming a wardrobe staple, while softly fraying cream tulle spilled out from under those flared cashmere sleeves, and long panels added a beautiful sense of movement to the sleeves of a coat in dusty mauve. Where Li will no doubt inspire legions of followers, though, is with her denim. Sourced from both Italy and L.A., here it came whipped into raver-esque mega-flares, a trench, and—most showstoppingly—a jean jacket that bore dramatic, almost Victorian sleeves made up of hundreds on hundreds of bunched indigo yarns.
