The Rise of the Yeezy

Yeezy Boost 350

A brief history of releases

The adidas Yeezy Boost line is a collaboration between Adidas and rapper Kanye West with a series of shoes designed by him. The initial debut of the collaboration was the Yeezy Boost 750, a mid-top sneaker in a grey and white colourway, in February 2015. The shoe was exclusively available in New York City and sold out in just 10 minutes. An all-black colourway of the same model saw a launch in December 2015.

At the end of June 2015, the Yeezy Boost 350 released in the ‘Turtle Dove’ colourway. This second sneaker from the collaboration, in a low-top shape, featured a Primeknit upper and a full length BOOST™ midsole and three further colourways were released including ‘Pirate Black,’ ‘Moonrock’ and ‘Oxford Tan.’

Yeezy Boost 350 V2

‘SPLY-350’

The secondary version of the shoe, the Yeezy Boost 350 V2, saw a coloured stripe added and text reading ‘SPLY-350’ on the upper. The Yeezy Boost 350 V2 ‘Beluga’ was released on September 24th 2016. Three further colourways of ‘Copper,’ ‘Green’ and ‘Red’ followed late November and a ‘Core Black/CoreWhite’ dubbed Oreo was released before Christmas.

Six colourways of the Yeezy Boost 350 V2’s released in 2017. The black and red (‘Bred’) and ‘Zebra’ in February and a much-hyped ‘Triple White’ at the end of April; the ‘Zebra’ restocked both in June 2017 and November 2018, alongside the ‘Triple White’ which saw a huge restock in September 2018. The 2017 holiday season saw three further colourways released, including the ‘Semi-Frozen Yellow’ which was reportedly extremely limited, as well as the ‘Beluga 2.0’ in November 2017 and the ‘Blue Tint’ in December.

2018 saw a slow start for the Yeezy Boost 350 V2 with the first release being the ‘Butter’ colourway on June 30th and two further releases in November, including the restock of the ‘Zebra’ and the release of the hotly anticipated ‘Sesame’ on November 23rd. Further releases in December included a wider release of the ‘Semi-Frozen Yellow’ on December 14th. The release of the translucent ‘Static’ sneaker on December 26th (reflective) and 27th (non-reflective). 2019 will see another re-release, this time for the ‘Butter’ colourway on Friday 11th January.

adidas are now ranked #2 in US sport footwear

In 2017, it was announced that adidas had overtaken the Jordan Brand to be the ranked the #2 in US sports footwear, but is the ever-increasing hype for Yeezys the reason why?

“All of the iterations released so far have not only sold out instantly, but also played a major role in propelling adidas to the most popular sneaker brand on Instagram in 2015,” said adidas Chief Executive Herbert Hainer on their successful collaboration with Kanye West. “The Yeezy Boost 350 even received the prestigious Footwear News ‘Shoe of the Year’ award. [There is] no question that the collaboration with Kanye West has significantly elevated the perception of our brand,” added Hainer.

Kanye West has been described by many as one of the most influential people in sneakers, not least because of the huge following both him and his wife Kim Kardsshian-West have on social media. Since returning to Twitter, Kanye has shared snap-shots of his design and production processes, including images of unreleased Yeezy Boost 350 V2’s.

The Biggest Trends on the Met Gala 2019 Red Carpet

By and away the biggest trend on tonight’s Met Gala red carpet was a tendency toward the futuristic in all its forms. Some translated the theme in head-to-toe silver, others in body harnesses and armor, and some with slinky cutouts that would make Lara Croft blush. Still, there were some great theme-rejecters too—see the squad of pale pink-clad women and dandified men. Read on for the best and biggest trends of the evening, and see how they stack up against our best dressed slideshow here.

The go-to when fashion’s feeling futuristic? Silver, bien sûr. A bevy of beauties, from Anna Ewers, Taylor Swift, and Kim K to Cindy Crawford herself, stepped out in metallic styles that conjured up the chicest cyborgs we’ve ever seen.

Stars on this year’s red carpet worked their obliques, showing off the sides of their torsos in revealing, cutout dresses. Many were accented with additional sparkles—see Brie Larson and Naomi Campbell—although as Margot Robbie proved, sometimes streamlined is best.

Why Models Are Actually Hanging Out at a Place Called Modellounge

Finding a suitable workspace is an issue that plagues many freelancers, and models, with their castings, fittings, and go-sees, are no different. Coffee shops and restaurants are nice, but they aren’t always the ideal place to catch up on emails or get things done. Enter Modellounge, a Soho House–style members-only club where New York City’s top models can go to relax, recharge, and, perhaps most important, have a moment of privacy. With outside guests and men banned from entering during normal hours, Modellounge offers a break from both gawkers and aggressively flirtatious bros, but that’s only part of the story.

“At this point, it’s much bigger than just having a safe space within the city,” says Modellounge founder Bernard Smith. “Starbucks isn’t the most ideal space for models who need a place to recharge, use a bathroom, or change clothes between appointments. As ground zero for models, not only do we provide a safe haven, we offer models a truly off-duty environment that isn’t demanding, but instead resourceful and rewarding.”

Smith began Modellounge in 2009 with the goal of creating a place where models could unwind between their castings and appointments, inspired by his girlfriend, Joan Smalls’s, search for such spots around NYC. “I conceived this idea to create a workstation where she and her model friends could converge and remain in work mode during the day,” says Smith. “I presumed it would benefit other female fashion models, but wanted to restrict access to models who were working and really in need, so I went exclusively with top agencies.” Though only models from reputable agencies are allowed access, there is no fee involved—allowing for Modellounge’s services to be enjoyed by everyone from established stars like Smalls to the newest fresh face. “We choose not to charge models and agencies because we feel girls should have access no matter their financial situation,” says Smith. Sustained by unique partnerships with well-known brands including Microsoft, Puma, and Beats by Dre, the line between service and commerce is one Smith is keenly aware of. Says Smith, “When we work with brands, we try to create meaningful programs and relationships that benefit our community of models.”

For Smith, it’s all about encouraging a sense of community. “We’re able to offer support through workshops, the Modellounge Card, and other key programming that benefits so many more than just a few models or agencies,” says Smith. Some of the perks are smaller, though no less appealing: The club’s simple black tote has become a street style staple sneaking into slideshows and Instagrams.

With the Modellounge itself a success—the Union Square location is always buzzing with energy—Smith already has his sights on changing the model apartment. “It was a natural progression, as we always have models asking us about temporary housing,” says Smith. “Bringing to life the Modellounge Apt has been a great experience—searching for a property, decorating the interior, and seeing the property in demand. It serves a real purpose, and I’m happy we spent time making sure it was the best possible option out there.” With the apartment and several other projects on the horizon, Smith is thankful for how far his business has come. “It took time and a lot of convincing, but now we’re in a very solid place. It takes time to gain real acceptance and develop credibility when you’re the new kid on the block. Without the incredible support that we’ve experienced, especially from models, we simply would not exist.”

Taylor Swift Has No Bad Blood With Her A-List Squad

While Taylor Swift leads the pack in squad style, the modern-day iteration of the chic celebrity clique owes a little something to Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio, whose perpetual wingmen included Tobey Maguire and Entourage’s Kevin Connolly. But whereas DiCaprio’s crew ran amok in the city back in the day, Swift is using her power posse for good, broadcasting a girl-empowerment message of unity and friendship, all while having fun and picking up some stylish tips from friends whose fashion goals are in league with her own.

After all, within Swift’s army are models Karlie Kloss, Martha Hunt, Lily Aldridge, and Gigi Hadid. And while we’ve spied Swift head to the gym with Kloss or the amusement park with Aldridge; act as surrogate aunt to Aldridge’s daughter, Dixie; and go shopping with Hadid, it’s when she’s bonding with friends from the music and film world that we see her style kick into high gear. A night out with actress Jaime King inspired Swift to debut a dress featuring a subtle shoulder reveal, dinner with Lorde called for leopard print, and who better than Revival singer Selena Gomez to have by your side as you debut a daring bandeau look at the Grammy Awards? Because when you’re Taylor Swift, the posher the posse, the more fun the party.

How Kendall Jenner Stays Grounded With 68 Million Followers and Counting

As her career shifts into overdrive, Kendall Jenner meets up with a few friends to talk about staying grounded—and making her brand bigger than ever.

Recently I happened to follow Kendall Jenner. Then I liked her. I should clarify that I followed her in the real world, not on Instagram, where most of the world follows her. I don’t have an Instagram account yet, but I am thinking of getting one, in part because of some of her comments on Instagram—meaning her actual comments to me, in real life. She showed me a couple of key strategies that make her the success she is on social media: With so many likes and tweets and retweets, refreshing @kendalljenner is a little like seeing the speedometer of one of the Formula One race cars that she Instagrammed herself watching in Monaco last spring. And FYI, it was no big deal, her sharing secrets. It was relaxed, natural, easy.

Because the second-to-youngest Jenner is like that: nice, easy to get along with, and I’m not alone in noticing this. “She is a very sweet person,” Karl Lagerfeld says. “Very caring and not at all spoiled by those superficial successes. I must say I love her.” I don’t know what you think of Kendall Jenner from watching her on Keeping Up with the Kardashians, her family’s tabloid reality show, but she’s calm and low-key in person, at least when she’s working—and as a model, she’s nearly always working.

Inside Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid’s sleepover party in Chanel Couture:

I was following her, by the way, in order to get a handle on just where she is at the moment and to sit in on some meetings arranged for her around town—informational career interviews, you might call them. As for where she is, let’s face it: She is everywhere, especially in fashion, where she has managed to be a starting player right out of the gate, at 20. In her still very short career, she has walked the runway for Dolce & Gabbana and Balmain, and even closed a show for Chanel Haute Couture. Meanwhile, she’s started a clothing line, Kendall + Kylie, with her sister. Victoria’s Secret gave her its runway, Estée Lauder a chance to pick and choose an eye-shadow palette of her own—part of its new Estée Edit collection—and sure enough, the palette is full of the wearable neutrals she is known for, along with signature smoky-gray and black tones in matte and shimmer finishes that make for her trademark eyes. It all gives you a sense that, like her, you could look amazing in a flash, like the flash of a fashion photographer’s camera.

Last year, Estée Lauder launched a Kendall Jenner–inspired red-orange lipstick called Restless. “It was the number-one most successful lipstick on our Web site,” said Jane Hertzmark Hudis, group president of the Estée Lauder Companies. Sales were heavy from mobile phones. “She chose the name, and it sold out.”

Is Sarah Snyder the Downtown Cool Kids’ Answer to Kim Kardashian West?

You may recognize Sarah Snyder as the girlfriend of Jaden Smith, the subject of recently dismissed charges of grand larceny, and one half of a series of paparazzi-ed front row PDA. But there’s more to the 20-year-old than Fashion Week canoodling and court dates—Snyder has become a bit of a social media force to be reckoned with. She has a serious Instagram following (546K and growing), an unremitting allegiance to false eyelashes, and a shameless way with a bathroom mirror selfie—and typically provoking a “love her or hate her” response, she’s basically the downtown cool kids’ version of Kim Kardashian West.

Her glossy, sassily captioned Instagram feed is almost entirely made up of pouty selfies, swimsuit shots, or OOTDs comprised of head-to-toe coveted items, from vintage Harley-Davidson T-shirts and all things VFiles to throwback Gucci tops and her most recent coup, the much-snapped Vetements DHL T-shirt. First shown, she’s sitting on the fender of a DHL truck wearing red fishnets and black shorts; fast-forward a few hours, and Snyder elevates the haute tee with a plush fire engine–red yeti shag jacket that matches both her fishnets and the text on the shirt. And, of course, she captures it all in the most millennial way possible: a bathroom selfie.

First Ladies Michelle Obama and Juliana Awada Finesse a Fashionable Alliance

Sure, on the heels of the president’s landmark Argentinian visit, the world is abuzz with talk about that tango, but what we couldn’t help notice is the apparent fashion connection between First Lady Michelle Obama and Argentina’s First Lady, Juliana Awada. Yesterday in Buenos Aires, in a bright blue floral Michael Kors dress from the line’s Spring 2019 collection, FLOTUS embraced Awada, who wore one of her signature all-white pantsuits. The chic world leaders chatted before Obama spoke to a crowd of young women about Obama’s “Let Girls Learn” initiative.

More serendipitous signs emerged later that evening, when Obama and Awada both arrived at the lavish state dinner in practically matching twirl-skirt frocks. But true to form, the two fashion-forward First Ladies each put their own spin on the champagne dresses: Obama’s satin number was encrusted with crystals and Awada’s was intricately embroidered with lace. It made for a very stylish alliance, indeed.

Good Jeans: Roger Vivier Celebrates Their Collaboration With Camille Seydoux

On Tuesday, the ladies who lunched were not uptown doyennes at the now-defunct Swifty’s but rather a cooler, chicer crowd of young women slipping their cutlery out of detached denim pockets that acted as place settings at Maman Tribeca, the recently opened, larger, airier sibling of the beloved Soho bakery. The francophone location was appropriate for the occasion: a celebration of stylist Camille Seydoux’s collaboration Prismick Denim collection with Roger Vivier. The idea for the collection of shoes and bags outfitted in pyramid patchwork denim came naturally to Seydoux, who is responsible for the red carpet looks of her bombshell sister, Lea. “Jean, it’s a material you always feel good in. And with the bag, it’s nice because it’s not boring, but it’s a neutral. It goes with so many things, but it’s fun. I hate boring bags, les Hermès me fatiguent!” And indeed, the ladies in the room proved that the collection was versatile enough to supplement a variety of ensembles, from Cleo Wade’s folk-embroidered chambray popover to Kate Foley’s floral-print frock. Seydoux was outfitted thematically, pairing a Sonia Rykiel embellished denim blouse and tweed shorts with her Prismick platforms and backpack. As guests left to creep back to offices, they were offered petite straw baskets and invited to shop the Maman marché and pick from a delectable variety of baked goods, as well as an assortment of bouquets bundled up, naturally, in Roger Vivier wrapping.

Hi-yah! Willow Smith immediately kicked into action as Chanel’s newest ambassador this week, taking to the brand’s Fall 2019 show in a double-C catsuit like a high-flying, high-fashion ninja. But as her Instagram showed, the young breakout style star’s presence was anything but stealth. Smith wasn’t the only one flexing their fashion muscle at the show, though. Chanel’s fit model, Amanda Sanchez, sprawled across the chairs at the Grand Palais bedecked in—what else?—a knit Chanel jumpsuit. And even Catherine Baba got in on the action in Paris, showing off her striped Gucci look while reclining in the hottest place in the city: a sauna stationed in the Plaza Athénée!

Back on American soil, Lupita Nyong’o and the cast of Eclipsed came together in a fashionable group hug.

By now, you’ve seen the runway photos, the atmosphere shots, the beauty close-ups, and the swirls and twirls of our street style snaps. Notice anyone missing? The designers who craft these collections tend to evade photographic documentation, appearing oh-so-briefly for their bows at the end of their shows or possibly as a hazy blur in a backstage pic. Lucky for us, many have taken to their Instagram accounts to share a behind-the-scenes peek at what Fashion Week is really like for a creative director. From Marc Jacobs fitting Lady Gaga in a fur-trimmed opera coat to Peter Dundas serving as bartender at his Just Cavalli party, these photos suggest there’s never a dull moment.
French Girls Do Everything Better, Even Instagram (And It’s Because They Don’t Care)

Selfies. Engagement. Follower ratio. Digital footprint. Previously reserved exclusively for the blogger set, self-marketing terminology has become an essential part of our daily vernacular. Admit it: How many times have you gone somewhere “just for the picture,” or made your friends reenact a fun moment so you could capture it in better lighting? And for those of us who feel kind of awkward posting that new Loewe bag on Instagram, there is now Snapchat, where shameless self-promotion can be subdued via a few cleverly placed emojis! In the moments that we aren’t posting, we are watching (read: stalking), observing, and building a bizarre viral fascination with people we have never met in person. While I understand that this is the name of the game, it occasionally scares me when my New York friends know what color Gucci loafers Chiara Ferragni has in her closet. This is a phenomenon I never really encountered in my years of living in Paris. And so I wondered: Is it just that I never noticed, or is it possible that our social media epidemic somehow bypassed the trend-resilient French, kind of like ’80s fitness-mania and athleisure?

“I would say that the contemporary obsession with social networks is a fairly universal phenomenon, not necessarily linked to a country. We are all on them. Not being on one of them would almost be like living in the margins of society,” says Stéphanie Delpon, cofounder of the Paris creative agency Pictoresq. Although she spends significant time on Instagram looking for the next Parisienne du jour to cast in projects, she maintains a “passive” personal approach to social media. This is a position adopted by many Françaises, who choose to quietly observe rather than throwing themselves in the middle of the attention-seeking circuit. In the moments that these social media ghosts do decide to share the occasional photos, they are most likely to post ambiguous shots, which tend to be intentionally obscured by large shadows, while ours are amplified by Facetune. Speaking of Facetune, very few Parisiennes know of the existence of such applis—applications—mainly because they simply have no use for them. “In France, taking a selfie is rather shameful. It’s fun to do it from time to time with girlfriends, but if a selfie is taken too seriously, it’s really frowned upon. I think this is related to the fact that the French culture seeks more value in the intellectual rather than the physical,” says Julie Palasse, a merchandiser for Alexander McQueen. “I find selfies to be rather decadent,” says Delpon. “All you are really saying is: ‘I spent hours taking a photo of myself from every angle; here’s a photo where I find myself beautiful—now please admire me!’ It’s a bit unnerving, isn’t it?” Well, when you put it that way . . .

And yet, both women unanimously agree that Instagram is a great tool that, if used correctly, can open up many interesting opportunities. Delpon particularly admires girls who have successfully created brand universes through social platforms, citing designer friends Camille de Dampierre (@camillededampierre) and Océane Buret (@o_c_e_e) as examples. She prefers engaging with brand content directly, rather than going through the intermediaries, i.e., fashion bloggers: “I think we are all a bit tired of seeing their sponsored posts.” She also enjoys following more discreet accounts that exhibit the interesting inner worlds of the user. “The girls I follow don’t take selfies; they maintain a certain distance with themselves and do not seek to build a narcissistic showcase. They feature their lifestyle, their friends, their artwork, or images that have attracted their attention—in short, their eye, their vision on the world,” says Delpon, naming Claire Margueritte (@clairelagalere), Jan Scott Melka (@Janmelk), and Alice Pfeiffer (@alicepfeiffer) as a few cool girls to watch. All of them have fun, eclectic profiles that convey a good eye, a blasé attitude, and a penchant for interesting photography with witty captions, to boot. None of them have more than 6,000 followers, possibly because they aren’t really trying. “Being popular on Instagram is like being rich in Monopoly, isn’t it?” Delpon adds. “The coolest French girls are not aiming to be It girls, they do not have 150,000 Instagram followers, and they are not too aware of their image. Instead, they are creative and have many different passions and interests. They are authentic and genuine, and that’s what sets them apart.” It’s interesting how quickly #Goals can shift from being the girl with the perfect morning matcha to being the quirky girl who marches to the beat of her own drum. It’s interesting how quickly #Goals can start feeling that much more attainable.

Today at the Fall 2019 Marques ‘ Almeida show in London, women paraded down the runway in all manner of XXL ensembles, ranging from long and lean zip-up sweatshirts to oversize hoodies that fell to the knee. The one thing the models had in common? Most of them weren’t wearing any pants. And to be honest, they didn’t need to be. Thanks to the likes of Rihanna and Kendall Jenner, the idea of leaving your trousers at home feels totally tangible—dare we say, freeing!—just so long as the proportions and the styling is right.

If you’re planning to re-create the look, then elevating it, in the most literal sense, is key—yes, there’s yet another reason to get back into a stiletto this spring. We’d say the sportier the sweatshirt, the fancier and more ornate the heel should be: think embroidered or studded with embellishments. And remember, if the top-as-dress theory is still leaving you wanting, throw a pair of stockings or thigh-high boots into the equation for a bit of extra coverage. Above, 10 stylish ways to give the pant-less trend a chic pair of legs.

5 Style Lessons From Naomi Campbell’s Fashion Month Wardrobe

When it comes to bringing glamour to the red carpet, no one does it better than Naomi Campbell. When she wasn’t walking the runways this fashion month, she has been busy appearing at a variety of parties and events looking every inch like a living, breathing fashion editorial. And really, who better to give instruction on the art of event dressing? Never one for hoodies and high-tops—unless they’re Givenchy—when dressing for an evening out, Campbell keeps things sexy and extravagant: The supermodel has never met a fur too luxurious, a diamond too big, or an ensemble too revealing. Over the top? Hardly. Despite her love of excess, Campbell always manages to exude chic—we could all stand to learn a little from her decadent fashion philosophy.

When In Doubt, Alaïa
If there is one designer who is a staple in Campbell’s closet, it is her close friend Azzedine Alaïa. Campbell’s collection of the designer’s dresses is legendary—rivaled only by that of fellow supermodel Stephanie Seymour. During Fashion Week, Campbell always manages to dip into her archives and pull out a showstopper Alaïa look. Can’t do the same? Just keep the dresses short and the waistline pronounced.

There’s No Such Thing as Too Much Fur
Even though she’s posed for PETA, Campbell cannot resist the allure of an oversize fur. At the Fenty x Puma after-party, she managed to upstage Rihanna by wearing a white mink over a crisp suit; then at Moncler’s bash, she paired green, printed satin, and fur with a black stole for layer upon layer of luxurious pelts. Most people will never have occasion to wear two furs at once—we’d suggest some fun furry accessories instead—but Campbell showcases the possibilities admirably.

How This British Nail Art Star Is Reinventing 9-to-5 Style

While the bold presence of certain young breakout designers at New York Fashion Week seemed to announce a new progressive, individualistic trajectory for the industry, London has long taken an adventurous, fearless approach to style. From the days of Mary Quant miniskirts to DIY punk to today’s plays on gender and race, trends are meant to be bucked or reimagined altogether. And one of the city’s prominent creative forces, WAH Nails owner Sharmadean Reid, is a testament to this natural-bred flair.

Reid was at the forefront of the nail art craze that swept the world beginning in 2009, and her personal style is just as imaginative and irreverent, a product of both her Jamaican roots and her fascination with British tradition. At work and off-duty, she incorporates an exuberant mix of military-inspired outerwear, colorful Caribbean inflections, and plenty of newfound local designers. Moments after escaping backstage at London Fashion Week, where she and her team of nail artists worked the shows, Reid chatted about the local designers who excite her, why she never matches her manicure to her look, and how she draws inspiration from Rihanna fan Instagrams.

“Sleep Is for Billionaires” = The WAH Mantra
I totally got into WAH Nails accidentally. I was a stylist and had no intention of being in the beauty industry: I just really wanted a space for my friends and me to hang out and get our nails done. It didn’t exist, so I thought I would build it myself. This was in December 2008—I started working on it straightaway, and we opened the first salon in Dalston in summer of 2009. “Sleep is for billionaires!” is my business mantra. I don’t deserve to rest yet! We’re currently working on a really exciting clothing collaboration, which will come out in a year; a pop-up salon with the French football championship in Paris; and starting a big summer school festival to teach girls career skills and business entrepreneurship.

Starting the Workday in PJ’s
A typical day starts with me sitting in my pajamas answering all my emails and clearing my inbox around 7:00 a.m. I will go to the salon after dropping my son off at school, check on the girls [nail technicians], and we might shoot a little GIF for Instagram. Inspo is important, and we try to make all the content fresh, original, and fun. I talk a lot with my staff about social planning, and then I’ll work on collaborations and business developments. So I might work on the production for the clothing line, or maybe I’m going to Paris to view locations for our pop-up salon, or I’ll send new product ideas off to my manufacturers.

Traditional Style With a Twist
I like to dress fairly classic but with a weird, unexpected twist. I love being British and I think eccentricity is part of our heritage. I like jeans that are loose-fit but a bit tight on my bum. Lately I like going on the high street for jeans and just finding really throwaway pairs. My favorite ones are from Zara’s teen line that have rips and frays, and they’re ultramarine blue, which is my favorite color for denim. For sweaters I’m really into cashmere and lambswool. I am obsessed with this one line, Hades; they embroider bands on lambswool sweaters. I bought one with “The Slits” across the front, which was an influential all-female punk band from London. And always with Bass Weejuns loafers! I feel like royalty.

Since Amal Clooney (née Alamuddin) came onto the scene, she’s gravitated toward a certain ladylike look, and it’s no wonder that she’s made Oscar de la Renta, a brand currently helmed by designer Peter Copping, a go-to. The late great American designer created Clooney’s elegant wedding dress, a look that has influenced countless brides-to-be ever since.

After her lavish Italian wedding ceremony, Clooney swapped out the floor-sweeping train for a flapper-inspired number that showed her more playful side. When it comes to dressing 9 to 5, though, it’s the tailored separates that she’ll reach for more often than not: On a recent business trip to Athens, the attorney opted for a classic De la Renta sheath with a graphic mixed-media pattern, before switching things up for an evening meeting with an oversize Prince of Wales check outfit. During Clooney’s tenure as a Columbia Law School visiting professor, her working uniform has consisted of the brand’s knee-grazing tweed skirtsuits. When the 38-year-old met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, she wore a prim yet unfussy bow-trimmed sweater and full A-line skirt—globally influential and office-appropriate all at the same time.

Narciso Rodriguez

It’s rare to see a big chunky sweater at Narciso Rodriguez, as we did when the second model out emerged in hand-knit black cashmere with a wrap neckline and an asymmetrical hem. Rodriguez is an exacting tailor; his jackets are precision instruments, engineered for a perfect fit. It means that his clothes are quite formal in tone—you don’t wear Narciso to Sunday brunch with the girls. Or at least, you didn’t until now. Rodriguez showed his sweater with an asymmetrical hem silk skirt, but paired with vintage Levi’s it could be just the thing for your weekly ritual green juice and avocado toast.

There was more where that casually chic sweater came from. Rodriguez had a pair of wrap coats, the laid-back spirit of which was accentuated by their baked-in plissé wrinkles. Another group of jackets and coats was made from the reverse side of wool jacquard so that grids of floating yarns were visible. They looked almost like blankets. Clutched in the crooks of arms, the collection’s new bags followed the same soft, unstructured principle. In the past, Rodriguez has done mostly frame bags and architectural clutches. Change was definitely afoot; there were even pointy-toed metallic oxfords.

His other interest this season was bias cutting; that doesn’t necessarily qualify as news with Rodriguez, but the vigor with which he pursued it does. The panne velvet of the closing slip dress looked like liquid; it’ll feel like a dream to wear. He also tried bias cutting suede, a tricky proposition; thanks to its weight, the three-dimensional results were almost sculptural. Best of the lot was a series of narrow shifts paneled in bronze or pewter in abstract shapes that resembled letters. Swap out those shiny oxfords for heels, and you’ve got yourself a date night dress.

Carmen vs. Karmen: Who Is the Ultimate Michael Kors Muse?

Michael Kors has always kept things consistent when it comes to his branding. Try as you may, you will never find a piece of Kors imagery that could ever be described as grungy, or weird, or anything less than aspirational and luxurious. The brand’s focus on glamour and excitement has resulted in a constant stream of imagery featuring yachts, Gulfstream planes, vintage cars, and, more often than not, the presence of a staggeringly beautiful blonde. Over the years, names like Sasha Pivovarova and Vanessa Moody have appeared in the designer’s campaigns, but when it comes to the definitive Kors women, it all goes back to two: Carmen Kass and Karmen Pedaru. The elegant Estonian homophones have both served as the face of Michael Kors, representing his ideal across a multitude of product lines and seasons. But who is the ultimate Michael Kors muse? The face-off, below:

Carmen Kass
Age: 37
Hometown: Tallinn, Estonia
Number of Years Working with Kors: 10
Off-Duty: A true Renaissance woman, Kass is fashionable and politically active—running for Estonian Parliament back in 2004. Along with her partner, Grandmaster Eric Lobron, Kass is an avid chess player, and headed up the Estonian Chess Federation.
Greatest Modeling Achievement: Landing on the cover of Vogue five times. As one of the busiest models of the early ’00s, Carmen Kass did campaign work for everything from Tom Ford–era Gucci to Phoebe Philo’s Chloé, but in Kors Kass found her lengthiest collaboration.
Secret Advantage: Pedaru may rule the current scene, but Kass’s accomplishments elevate her to supermodel status.

One to Watch: Claudia Li’s Showstopping Fall ’16 Denim

Label: Claudia Li

Need to Know: After facing tumult in her own life head-on last year, for her sophomore NYFW outing, designer Claudia Li riffed on the idea of self-preservation, of rebirth in the face of hardship. Boasting a background in fine arts, and having cut her teeth as the womenswear designer at J.W.Anderson, New Zealand–raised Li’s minimalism is of a warm stripe. Fall finds her embracing styles with varying sorts of cocoon-like appeal: wide strips of fabric, knotted to armor-like effect; belled sweater cuffs; deep, sculptural folds. If on paper those ideas sound heavy, make no mistake: Li’s got a beautiful eye for lightness. One voile shirtdress you could see becoming a wardrobe staple, while softly fraying cream tulle spilled out from under those flared cashmere sleeves, and long panels added a beautiful sense of movement to the sleeves of a coat in dusty mauve. Where Li will no doubt inspire legions of followers, though, is with her denim. Sourced from both Italy and L.A., here it came whipped into raver-esque mega-flares, a trench, and—most showstoppingly—a jean jacket that bore dramatic, almost Victorian sleeves made up of hundreds on hundreds of bunched indigo yarns.

Where to find it: Li’s stockists are still TBD—but what we can say is that the designer is in the process of confirming some top-tier, tastemaking retailers.

Hedi Slimane’s affinity for musicians is well documented, but rock stars aren’t his only source of inspiration. Sure, music appreciation is a requirement to join Slimane’s cabal of muses, but male models play just as important a role as the frontmen of buzzed-about bands. Whether they’re the handsome sons of Hollywood royalty or the willowy boys he handpicks while street casting, Slimane’s favorites are united by a nonchalant cool that they carry into endeavors far beyond fashion.

Victoria Beckham Shows How to Do a Novelty Print Like a Grown-Up

The pleated skirt, first popularized on the runways at Proenza Schouler, Céline, Altuzarra, and Gucci, has become every fashion girl’s best friend. It’s the kind of fail-proof piece that can be worked in a myriad of ways depending on the occasion: buttoned up with a sensible oxford shirt for the office, or zhooshed up for date night with a plunging V-neck top. Victoria Beckham has clearly figured out how to work the look into her winter street style wardrobe and was seen out in New York today wearing a pleated skirt of her own design.

The designer has never shied away from fashion-forward ideas—she has tricky-to-pull-off culottes in her closet, as well as oversize menswear looks—and today’s ensemble was just as spicy. Beckham’s orange turtleneck sweater is a nice departure from the muted colors we’re used to seeing at this time of year and also picks up on the hues in her skirt. The print itself—a charming matchstick illustration—is certainly vibrant enough to part the clouds on a gloomy midwinter’s afternoon in Manhattan.

Burberry and Tom Ford Both Announce See-Now-Buy-Immediately Collections for September

What a day of drama!

February 5, 2019 might go down in history as the day it sank in that the whole fashion system is about to reconfigure. Hot on the heels of Burberry’s announcement that it will be launching a see-now-buy-immediately women’s and men’s show in September, Tom Ford has declared the same thing.

Ford has called off press previews of his Fall 2019 collection, which were scheduled in New York for next week, and will show and sell the offering, all in one go, in September. “In a world that has become increasingly immediate, the current way of showing a collection four months before it is available to customers is an antiquated idea and one that no longer makes sense,” Ford said in a release. “Our customers today want a collection that is immediately available . . . Showing the collection as it arrives in stores will remedy this, and allow the excitement that is created by a show or event to drive sales and satisfy our customers’ increasing desire to have their clothes as they are ready to wear them.”

The chink that was opened by the live-streaming of shows has precipitated a cascading revolution. Digital technology and handheld gadgets have blown open the previously enclosed world in which collections were chiefly for the eyes of editors, buyers, and journalists. Tech-minded Christopher Bailey, Burberry’s CEO and chief creative officer, has spent the last decade pushing and experimenting with every possible new form of connecting and communicating with potential consumers during shows in real time.

All this has landed fashion in a strange halfway house over the past couple of years—opening a window on shows that has turned the performance of fashion into something more like open-access entertainment. That is not enough for Bailey, or for Ford. And surely, where these two titans of fashion lead, more competitors will follow.

It remains to be seen what this will mean for all kinds of people who are involved in the back end of producing clothes, not to mention the tiered hierarchy of buyers, editors, and journalists whose ways are predicated on the ins and outs of the old system. From the outside, though, it makes a sort of sense. It has never been easy to explain fashion’s labyrinthine processes to an outsider, anyway, and it’s bound to strike consumers as a completely obvious thing to do. Burberry has its own global network of stores and the power to buy fabrics and create stock in readiness for a simultaneous showing and selling bonanza on release day. Not everyone in fashion can gear up to do that.

But one thing’s certain: As of September, this new Burberry reality will be one down for the runaway fortunes of fast fashion, which has profited on the gift of the traditional gap between designers’ shows and deliveries. When Tom Ford came back to the runway with his first womenswear show, his thought was to ban press and Internet coverage altogether; he hated the idea of the clothes being seen everywhere, visually consumed before he even had a chance to sell a single piece. Now the copyists’ opportunity to get designers’ collection ideas into their stores months ahead of the original designs is about to be wiped out. It feels like the whole of the landscape of fashion—top to bottom—is finally shifting.

At Super Bowl 50, Beyoncé Pays Homage to Michael Jackson

Beyoncé has had quite a weekend. First, she dropped “Formation,” a single with a pointed message and fierce fashion; then she stole the show with her halftime performance at Super Bowl 50. Dazzling onstage in a custom military-inspired look by Dsquared2 (over an Ashton Michael bodysuit), the superstar was clearly paying homage to what Michael Jackson wore when he sang at Super Bowl XXVII, back in 1993. “He is her biggest musical influence,” said Knowles’s stylist Marni Senofonte in an exclusive interview with Vogue.com’s Marjon Carlos.

Headliners Coldplay had said they wanted to “honor past, present, and future” this year. To that end, they invited the Youth Orchestra LA to represent the future, and asked Beyoncé, who had performed in 2013, back to the stage. Past is generally not a word that applies to Beyoncé and her relentlessly forward-thinking vision, but in nodding to the Black Panthers’s kit (via the dancers’ berets and harnesses) and, most directly, Jackson’s Super Bowl performance—said to be one of the most viewed in television history—she honored history while making it.

Kiev Fashion Days Kicks Off With a Lot of Glitz and a Little Jane Birkin

Mercedes-Benz Kiev Fashion Days kicked off with the sequin-pumped label Andreeva by Olga Andreeva. Inspired by Milton Glaser’s “I Love New York” logo and his kaleidoscope-swirled posters from the ’80s, Andreeva’s nightclubby collection included plenty of mesh. The fabric took the form of sleeves tacked onto a silk jumpsuit that was striped in candied hues of red, green, and peach, and as the black-and-white panels of a brocade dress. There were more discreet pieces as well, like a dress with the front covered in silver sequins, which Andreeva paired with a sweeping cardigan made of strips of dyed ostrich feathers. Still, one of the most eye-catching looks had the least fabric of all: a mesh long-sleeved dress with sequined appliquéd embroideries that acted as glittering cover-ups on the torso—paging Miley Cyrus.

Next came Flow the Label, one of the buzziest names in Ukraine at the moment. The brand’s two designers, Viktoriia Balaniuk and Véronika Vèz, have a reputation for producing looks that flatter the body, thanks to their waist-cinching cuts. This time, they looked to the shaggy appeal of Jane Birkin and used an earthy palette that echoed the shades of architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s interiors. The result was a cool combination of two worlds: For a hint of biblio-chic, there were cropped bell-bottoms in creamy tan velvet paired with a sand-color vest; elsewhere a fitted blue blazer and matching bell-bottoms slit at the sides created a sexier silhouette. The outerwear, which included corduroy jackets stamped with contrasting velvet pockets, was strong. The success of the show was immediately apparent: We spied one editor hauling a three-piece velvet suit out of the building.

Where Were All the American Designers at Super Bowl 50?

Few things at last night’s Super Bowl were more patriotic than Lady Gaga singing—nay, belting out—the national anthem in a glittering red suit, her nails painted Old Glory blue, and her shoes a mix of stripes (right foot) and sparkles (left one). Gaga’s American-inspired ensemble paired nicely with the Blue Angels flyover and the large flag unfurled behind her, though one aspect left this writer questioning: The look was custom designed by Alessandro Michele for Gucci. Curious that Lady Gaga and her stylist, Brandon Maxwell, would ask an Italian brand to create a look that screams “Americana!”—especially when you consider Gaga’s longstanding relationship with Marc Jacobs, whose Spring 2019 collection might be the most American-influenced show in history.

The Italian takeover continued later in the evening. Bruno Mars and his dancers sported Run-D.M.C.-inspired black leather tops and trousers designed by Versace, whose Greco wave pattern ran around each outfit’s cuffs. Beyoncé chose Dsquared2, a Milan-based brand helmed by Canadian designers, for her onstage look, a leather jacket and leotard that paid homage to Michael Jackson’s Super Bowl XXVII ensemble.

So where were the Americans? You’d have to look down to see them. Coldplay’s Chris Martin wore Jordan Spizike sneakers, while Mars sported black Nike Cortez kicks.

Meet the Stylist Behind That Beyoncé Throwback Gucci “Formation” Video Look

Who knew Alessandro Michele’s new Gucci girl was a Texas Bama at heart? Well, it certainly appeared so in the stirring and electrifying new visuals for Beyoncé’s single “Formation,” which shows the pop behemoth exploring not only her Creole roots but those of the storied Italian heritage brand. Trotting out a—ahem—coordinated artillery of female dancers sheathed in matching custom Gucci monogrammed crop tops, leggings, and high-waist booty shorts, Beyoncé rendered not only an homage to the halcyon days of logomania that made Gucci a household name, but the hip hop culture that helped to make it a style phenomenon in the ’90s. Because as stylist and mastermind behind the look, Marni Senofonte, reminds us, “New is the old.”

“I just love Alessandro’s work. I just love what he’s doing with that collection,” Senofonte said by phone moments after Beyoncé stepped off the Super Bowl 50 halftime stage, where the stylist also coordinated the Black Panther–inspired Dsquared2 looks for both Bey and her small army of backup dancers. “I saw how he was taking Gucci in this complete opposite direction from where it was, and then I was like, ‘Let’s just go completely old school!’ Gucci is new and fresh and completely different, but we still have to remember how amazing our pasts are.”

Taking style cues from her own new Gucci Dionysus Supreme GG handbag, Marni reached out to Gucci’s design team for approval, and set to work that night devising the “uniforms.” “There was a whole mixture of bodies in there, and all different skin colors. I had girls who were size 12, I had girls who were size 2. It was really beautiful to dress these women and these amazing dancers. It was great to work with normal girls!” she says.

The Made-in-Ukraine Movement Is a Fashion Revolution

Since 2014’s civil unrest, Ukraine’s fashion industry has undergone its own revolution. There is an influx of patriotism and homegrown pride that seems to affect the marketing of even the most underwhelming pieces of clothing: Wool socks sold on the side of the street are proudly stamped with phrases like “Made in the region of Zhytomyr, Ukraine,” while $3 beanies are emblazoned with the country’s coat of arms. Every other booth in a bazaar is filled with colorful handmade vinoks, a traditional Ukrainian flower crown. And, of course, everything is “Made in Ukraine,” a phrase that has come to hold great symbolism and even inspired it’s own hashtag—there are over 150,000 results of manufactured goods, from coffee mugs to passport covers, hailing from the country that are currently available for view on Instagram.

The same wave of national pride has hit high fashion, as well. Ukrainian designer Vita Kin shed light on the vyshyvanka, a traditional Ukrainian dress that street style stars scrummed to get into, while Sleeper, a pajama label now sold on Moda Operandi, proudly advertises their Ukrainian roots. “[Before the Maidan revolution of 2014], people were more neutral and passive toward Ukrainian products,” says stylist and journalist Olaa Zhyzhko. “But now, people are more proud. For example, now it became important to support Ukrainian farmers and to buy their food even in posh markets, or to support Ukrainian interior designers and not go to Ikea. Our economy feels difficult now, and one thing became clear: We, the clients, should invest in Made-in-Ukraine labels, which should flourish and gain success, which means designers understood that they should pay more attention to quality and pricing,” says Zhyzhko. “After [the] revolution, we’ve just become more proud of ourselves. That feeling of inferiority has passed away.” Here, see the nine Made-in-Ukraine labels we’re about to invest in now.

Dakota Johnson Steps Out in Gucci’s Chic Ugly-Pretty Shoe

After taking the reins at Gucci almost a year ago, Alessandro Michele’s retro maximalist aesthetic (read: tiered ruffled dresses, floral suits, and lady bags furnished with throwback hardware) has been resonating with A-listers on and off the red carpet. Actress Dakota Johnson is an ardent fan of the Italian house, and stepped out onto the rainy sidewalks of New York earlier today in the brand’s heeled clogs.

Johnson’s winter footwear game has been decidedly on point this season, from the Timberlands she wore in Aspen to the studded boots at LAX. And her shoe choice today certainly puts her strides ahead of her peers.

Of course, the ugly-pretty appeal of the clog is well documented, and this version happens to be chic and practical all at once: It comes finished with the signature horsebit and an ankle-stabilizing strap to boot. The J. Mendel fur and pleated skirt are glamorous for sure, but it’s fair to say that the cool factor of this look was built from the ground up.

By now you’re probably familiar with the name Olivia Palermo, a woman whose chic street style maneuvers have made her a fixture on the front row. Turns out, the 29-year-old New Yorker has designs for your closet, too: On February 8, she’ll debut a collaboration with Nordstrom’s in-house label Chelsea28, just in time for New York Fashion Week. “It was important to start with life pieces, as I call them,” says Palermo. “Taking a great navy wide-leg pant, for example, and being able to restyle it.”

The Olivia Palermo + Chelsea28 collection is comprised of 32 moving parts that cover just about every aspect of a working wardrobe: boho dresses to hold sway in the city, menswear-inspired oxford shirting, and stylish everyday jeans that are easily dressed up at a moment’s notice. “Denim is such an important part of one’s wardrobe,” says Palermo, whose collection includes a tailored denim jumpsuit and midi skirt. “It’s important to understand what a girl wants. And Nordstrom has a similar take on the New York woman—she’s a woman on a mission who knows what she’s looking for.”

And since Palermo has a knack for mixing high and low fashion, she was eager to make sure the clothes were attainable for all her fans, too: The opening price point of the collection is surprisingly affordable—just $68. So can we expect to see more from Palermo and the Seattle retail giant in the future? “It’s a learning process,” she says. “We’re just getting into the groove of working together, and I’m looking forward to the response!”

Jessica Alba’s First Foray Into Fashion? It’s All in the Jeans

When it comes to denim, there’s not a lot Jessica Alba hasn’t experimented with: stonewashed short shorts, jeans with the waistband cut off Mariah Carey style, classic 501s, Blossom-inspired overalls, colored jeans, boyfriend jeans, skinny jeans, distressed jeans. “Oh, girl! I have all of it,” she says. “I probably have two full racks of denim and each hanger is doubled up. It’s excessive. It’s next-level.” No wonder, then, that the actress and entrepreneur’s first foray into the world of fashion happens to be in the form of a collaboration with denim brand DL1961. “I wear so much of it,” Alba says. “And there’s nothing like finding the perfect pair of jeans.”

Alba, who is also the face of the new grunge-inspired Spring 2019 collection, will design eight to 10 pieces for the Fall 2019 collection that hits shelves in August. “I live in Southern California and people aren’t too fussy out here, so wearing jeans out to dinner or an event isn’t out of the question,” she says. “You can throw on a great blazer, a blouse, and a pump and that’s just as acceptable as a cocktail dress.” As a result, she’s become a dab hand at everything from the Canadian tuxedo (she teams hers with a pair of killer heels and wears it to meetings) to high-low (think a denim jacket over a Giambattista Valli cocktail dress come evening).

When it came to designing her own collection, Alba used her own rather enviable body as a starting point. “I remember having to lay down to button up those tiny Daisy Duke shorts because I had a big booty. I had to squeeze into my friends’ jeans because my mom wouldn’t buy them for me,” she says. “My inspiration for most things in life is always the ’90s supermodels: Cindy, Naomi, Claudia. Those bodies! Lately I’ve been getting back into bell-bottoms, but high-waisted and not too flared. The jeans that I’m designing are going to celebrate women’s bodies and show off those curves.”

The label’s ethics were also a good fit for Alba, whose Honest Company produces nontoxic, environmentally friendly products. “DL1961 is a thoughtful company in the way they go about creating denim, and that angle was important to me as well,” she explains. The denim brand relies on an unique “confection” of fibers that cuts the processing time in half and uses half the dye, half the water, and half the energy that it takes to produce traditional denim. The label has also developed an on-site filtration system that purifies the wastewater until it’s potable, a combination of eco-friendly practice and technology that, Alba adds, creates reliably cool denim. “The fabric stretches to your body and shape but doesn’t get baggier throughout the day.”

This season she’s gravitating to a high-waisted Farrow jean in black, which she tends to wear “with a thin white tee, an oversize blazer, and a loafer or oxford.” The one piece she is most keen to perfect next? Says the budding designer: “There’s nothing like a great denim jacket.”

Is It Socially Acceptable to Vape in Public?

If there’s anything Leonardo DiCaprio loves more than a Citi Bike, it’s his vape. His trusty e-cigarette has accompanied him on yacht trips in St. Barth’s, while he scoped out the scene at Art Basel, and most recently served as his date at Saturday night’s SAG Awards. Now that Leo has taken his vape commitment to the next level, we’re confronted with a new etiquette question: Is it ever socially acceptable to vape indoors?

The proper protocol regarding electronic smoking has been up for debate ever since the rise of e-cigarette use. Before New York included e-cigarettes in its no-smoking ban (which prohibits use in bars, restaurants, offices, parks, and on beaches), rules on vaping varied from establishment to establishment. But does the public e-cigarette ban extend to private functions? In the past few years, vaping has been making the rounds at many glamorous circuits: Katy Perry was seen sharing a vape pen with Orlando Bloom at this year’s Golden Globes after-party; Sarah Silverman showed off her liquid pot pen during the Emmy’s red-carpet procession in 2014; and, back when she was still dating Michelle Rodriguez, Cara Delevingne puffed out tiny vapor rings while watching a Knicks game.

Since the smell emitted from e-cigarettes is much less offensive than cigarette smoke (many e-liquids come in bubblegum and fruity flavors), and because it leaves no lingering odor on clothing or hair, many believe e-lighting up at a public gathering is not a faux pas. “There’s a certain smugness to vaping,” said Chloe Malle, Vogue’s Social Editor. “I feel like people think, I’m allowed to do this, don’t try to stop me.” Freelance writer Tulio Espinosa admitted he recently used a vape indoors during a wedding: “I did it twice and people stared, but nobody really said anything.” At a recent art show opening in Brooklyn, the Pax, a small dry herb vaporizer that looks like something that could have been designed by Apple, was casually being passed around the crowd. “What is it with this thing?” asked one of the attendees. “I keep seeing everyone with these in Chelsea.”

“Until [vaping] becomes ubiquitous, people are going to be unsure or nervous about where they can do it,” explained Lizzie Post, who shares her great-great-grandmother Emily’s penchant for doling out social advice and currently hosts a weekly podcast called Awesome Etiquette. “If it’s going to be distracting at all, that’s when I say it’s time to go somewhere else,” she said. “I don’t know what was going on at the moment Leo pulled [his vape] out, but my guess is, all the cameras turned straight to him, and whatever was going on onstage was completely missed.”

Eviana Hartman, a co-owner of Tetra, a new website dedicated to “elevating the aesthetic of smoking,” agreed that it’s always in best taste to simply step outside. “Why wouldn’t you? You might even strike up a conversation with a stranger,” she said. “Or, if you’re trapped inside a Hollywood awards ceremony with no way out and paparazzi hovering, then duck.”

As more and more states legalize marijuana, the social conundrum only becomes trickier. “I’d say, as a general rule of thumb, it’s not polite to brazenly ingest psychoactive substances in public; it might make people uncomfortable,” Hartman said. But even in the most liberal of circumstances, Post believes it’s still important to check with the host first. “You don’t want to steal your host’s thunder by pulling out the vape at a party and getting everyone high,” she said. “At least let your host do that if he or she wants to!”

If there’s one fashion staple that is versatile enough to chicly, seamlessly go from day to night, boardroom to cocktails and even weekend brunch, it’s the knee-high (or over-the-knee) boot. And it’s cropped up on every A-lister from Emily Ratajkowski to Kourtney Kardashian to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. However, no star has embraced the boot quite like model-of-the-moment Gigi Hadid. The 20-year-old stunner has sported her pair by Stuart Weitzman everywhere from the airport to post-show catch-ups with fellow runway regular Kendall Jenner, without missing a beat.

The trick to wearing them? Well, you’re in luck: Anything goes! Whether you pair them with cascading wide-leg pants or skinny jeans, the boot provides maximum leg-lengthening abilities and will ground any look with a sense of easy refinement. Here, a selection of the season’s most coveted styles—all on sale. Get them now before they’re gone forever.

British Menswear Star Craig Green Makes a Surprise Appearance at Stockholm Fashion Week

While you might know Björn Borg as one of the world’s greatest tennis players, Swedes also think of him in conjunction with skivvies. For years now he’s been sort of the Calvin Klein of Sweden, and his logoed underthings are fairly ubiquitous. The snow started just before I headed out to the label’s Stockholm Fashion Week presentation, and I was feeling pretty sorry for the models, thinking they’d be standing around in very little at all. But that was not the case. The brand teamed with British menswear designer Craig Green this season, as it begins to add athleisure to its offerings.

Models in cream and black garments—some quilted, others with adjustable ties and removable pockets, accessorized with convertible backpacks—stood on piles of dirt as Green explained that the neutral palette was inspired by the idea of shadows. The designer’s use of piqué fabrics, traditionally found in tennis gear, nodded to the company’s founder, while the circular elements throughout echoed those in Green’s namesake collection, and recalled that of a tennis ball. Borg and Green, it seems, are a pair well matched.

After weeks of subzero Celsius temps here in Sweden, the thermometer and the sun were up as the Fall 2019 season kicked off with Whyred’s womenswear show. Though it was presented in the grand concert hall at Berns, built in 1863, where glamour girls like Marlene Dietrich and the Supremes performed, the show was informed by punk rather than polish. Inspired by the ’80s indie guitar scene in London, which, the show notes explained, came after New Wave and before grunge, creative director Roland Hjort showed his clothes on models who looked like they were coming home from a rocking all-nighter.

Having name-checked Bobby Gillespie as an exemplar, Hjort showed plenty of tweedy menswear pieces, in keeping with fashion’s current fixation with gender fluidity, which were sometimes paired with shiny vinyl. Girlier and very mod minidresses, one in a blue plaid worn with short boots and tights, were intricately pleated. Variations of the pentagram appeared in insets throughout, as well as on the patches that adorned many pieces, including the company’s star coat, first designed 16 years ago and still a best seller.

If Whyred’s show rocked, AltewaiSaome’s rolled to a gentler beat. Japonisme, which appeared in several Pre-Fall collections, Valentino among them, showed up here in kimono details. Softly draped pieces contrasted with the more tailored pants that designers Natalia Altewai and Randa Saome often layered them over.

Meet Axenoff, Opulent Jewels for Your Inner Tolstoy Heroine

“It was always strange for my mother, because as a boy, I was never interested in toys or games,” says jewelry designer Petr Axenoff. “The most exciting thing was to visit palaces, or museums in St. Petersburg.” And those modern-day czarinas similarly obsessed with pre-Revolutionary opulence need look no further than the Instagram page of Axenoff Jewellery, where nostalgia doesn’t just glimmer, it gleams. There, you can find a silver tiara lined with blue topazes; coronet-shaped rings dotted with diamonds and rubies; and enamel-work in a technique that dates back to the 1760s called “Rostov finift,” with pieces painstakingly hand-painted to depict cherubs cavorting on a pearl-rimmed cocktail ring, or a pair of women’s eyes carefully fitted inside pyramid-shaped earrings surrounded by green agates. Russian architecture, baroque interiors, and oil portraits by the likes of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edwin Austin Abbey, cited as inspiration, are interspaced between the pieces to underline their place at the end of a long line of serious glitz.

And now the label is taking that same notion of czarina-ready glitz and glamour a step further and onto the set of an era-appropriate television show—the much-buzzed-about BBC series War and Peace. Tapped by costume designer Edward K. Gibbon to specially create pieces for the series, Axenoff Jewellery adorns cast members ranging from Lily James as Natasha Rostova to Gillian Anderson as Anna Pavlovna Scherer. “They wanted something truly Russian,” explains Axenoff over Skype. “That is why they like to collaborate with us, because we are a Russian brand and we feel the spirit—so we were a perfect match with them.”

Why Diversity Needs to Be a Priority for New York Fashion Week: Men’s

Fashion Week diversity is typically a subject best explored during the postseason. Casts are analyzed, charts are made, numbers are crunched—and time and again the industry comes up short. Designers, casting directors, and agents all provide lip service regarding the importance of runways that mirror the multiculturalism of daily life, but when showtime rolls around, few actually showcase that level of inclusion. Though strides have been made—most notably, during Spring’s campaigns, where brands looked to unconventional muses, eschewing traditional ideas about gender, race, and body size—the catwalks have remained mostly unchanged. It’s time for some follow-through, fellas.

But it’s not all bad news: During the European men’s shows, influential labels like Balmain, Givenchy, Lanvin, and Hermès showcased an international array of male models on their catwalks, providing a much-needed increase in diversity. Even shows like Prada and Jil Sander (which have in the past been criticized for their homogenous casts) upgraded their rosters by embracing global beauty. Compared to a few years prior, the lineups at major shows focused on individuality rather than uniformity. The shift in gears allowed for a new generation of male models to showcase their talents. It boys like Sol Goss, Malik Jalloh, Trè Samuels, Wang Chenming, and Victor Ndigwe led the pack, appearing multiple times throughout the week and drumming up excitement wherever they appeared. And rather than examples of “tokenism,” these models were stars—and an essential component of what made the season great.

Still, several prominent shows failed to create diverse casts, relying instead on those comprised entirely of white male models. Whether an aesthetic choice or merely tone-deaf, few decisions could appear as entirely out of touch. With New York Fashion Week: Men’s beginning today, designers have the opportunity to change the system and underline New York’s reputation as a forward-thinking fashion haven. With beautiful faces flying in from all over the globe, trans models starting their own movements, and an audience eager to see a catwalk that reflects their tastes, there is no reason not to embrace all the diversity the modeling industry has to offer. Here’s hoping that the week rises up to the challenge.

Hat-hesitant? Who could blame you? As accessories go, an eccentric chapeau can make for a riskier bet than most. But even those of us who might typically choose a simple knit beanie during the cold months have ample reason to reconsider: There’s a beret revival in full swing—despite what certain French beauties may have to say to the contrary. After recent turns on runways from Isabel Marant to Saint Laurent menswear, and most famously—and oft-mimicked—those of Alessandro Michele at Gucci, the beret has made its way onto the streets. Our eagle-eyed editors have spotted an uptick in appearances both at the menswear shows abroad, and here on the streets of New York City.

Reports IRL beret fan and Vogue.com Fashion News Writer Steff Yotka of her tests in the field: “I find a beret to be a much better solution to keeping warm in winter than a traditional beanie. It has a nice structure that can turn the most basic outfit into something more special.” Consider it the easy, grown-up upgrade (or antidote) to the ubiquitous grungy slouch of off-duty model styles: both practical and pretty.

A Golden Globe winner for her role in Steve Jobs, the British actress is taking a particularly hands-on approach when it comes to her fashion choices for awards season this year. “[It] was created by Armani in collaboration with Kate and myself,” said stylist Cheryl Konteh of the dress that Winslet wore to the SAG Awards last night. “[It was] sculpted to Kate’s incredible body and teamed with black suede Jimmy Choo shoes.” As for the bling? “Neil Lane Art Deco onyx and diamond jewelry brings the whole look together in a perfect tribute to Hollywood glamour.”

As one of the faces of Lancôme, Winslet knows a thing or two about creating the right beauty look to complement her ensemble, too. Her skin was kept dewy and natural by makeup artist Jillian Dempsey, while hairstylist Renato Campora created a sleek side part and twisted bun as the crowing glory. Here, Winslet gives us a glimpse behind the scenes of her SAG Awards experience, and shares what it’s like to prep for a big red carpet moment.

Leading the pack in double-breasted eveningwear were Mr. Robot star Rami Malek and actor Anthony Mackie. Malek opted for a hint of texture with a satin shawl-collar style from CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund duo Ovadia & Sons, while Mackie kept things cool in blue Brunello Cucinelli. Also striking a chic blue note were Jon Hamm and O’Shea Jackson, Jr., who was joined by his equally dashing Straight Outta Compton costars.. The most dapper gent of the night? Beasts of No Nation actor Idris Elba, who made the most convincing case for the waistcoat that we’ve seen in years.

The 11 Best Fashion Instagrams of the Week: Cara, Kate Hudson, and More

No matter if you’re fluent in French or not, the style that was filtering in from Paris on our Instagram this week needed no translation. After all, the city played host to an international crowd for Couture Fashion Week, many of whom inflected distinctive French styles into their feeds. Iris Law, the young, pouty-lipped offspring of actor Jude, wore a silk Louis Vuitton pajama top to take the textbook—but nevertheless, stunning—Paris hotel balcony shot.

Kate Bosworth threw on a fuzzy long-line coat from one of France’s most storied fashion houses, Schiaparelli, to take in the romantic view of the Seine. Italian belle Margherita Missoni and Bianca Brandolini D’Adda momentarily had the best of both worlds twinning in matching couture looks by Roman-born, Paris-based designer Giambattista Valli. And Pascal Brault, who brought his own fashion pooch, Frickey, to Chanel’s show, fueled the growing—and très chic!—trend for front row canine companionship that Cara Delevingne ignited.

Gray Sweatpants on a Date? Drake Says Yes, You Can

“Do you own a pair of gray sweatpants? This is all in the name of fashion research,” I dash off a quick text to a stylish guy friend of mine.

He responds within seconds, asking if we’re talking about “cozy” athleisure staples or the—ahem—“eggplant emoji” outlines these pants often create. I chuckle at the “fashion trends” the Internet has wrought these days. Yes, thanks to the meteoric rise of the hilarious hashtag #andthenheworegraysweatpants, the choice post-workout sportswear of jocks has become fodder for memes. Humble gray sweatpants are no longer eyesores but eye candy on a guy when worn with, well, not much else.

But if we’re to listen to Drake, the current arbiter of athleisurewear, gray sweatpants are a look that women can easily make their own. Clearly the rapper likes his ladies to really let loose, once rapping, “Sweatpants, hair tied, chillin’ with no makeup on . . . that’s when you’re prettiest” on “Best I Ever Had”—and let’s not forget that this is a man who has been romantically linked to such stylish women as Rihanna and Serena Williams. But before we go dismissing the fashion and relationship advice of “heartbreak Drake,” there is something to be said about stripping down to a more undone state in order to create a sense of intimacy between you and your partner. As Vogue.com Market Editor Chelsea Zalopany explains, “Although it’s definitely not a first-date look, it’s a look that says, ‘I’m happily comfortable with you!’ I mean, what’s better—especially in the winter—than cozying up with a glass of wine and someone you enjoy?”

The best way to style this borrowed-from-the-boys look for a night in with your bae? Try plush options in luxurious, good-enough-to-touch fabrics, such as Baja East’s cashmere jacquard-printed pair, and experiment with silhouettes that are more flattering for you, be it Yeezy’s snug cotton trousers or Champion’s oversize lounge shorts. Because after all, there is nothing sexier than a woman who’s comfortable with herself.

Zayn Malik’s With Gigi Hadid: The Story Behind “Pillow Talk”

One Directioners, rejoice! Despite the band’s hiatus, its former fifth member, Zayn Malik, just released his debut video as a solo artist. The video for his song “Pillowtalk” features a familiar face to fashion fans: none other than Gigi Hadid. While the video—which features boxing female nudes and a lot of exploding floral imagery among a swirl of retro graphics, kaleidoscope and shattered-mirror effects—is causing a buzz with its racy undertones (Hadid and Malik are shown in various intimate clinches), its wardrobe is decidedly on point. And that is due to the ongoing collaboration between Malik and his post-1D stylist, Jason Rembert. “He’s a person who knows what he wants and knows what works for him,” said Rembert, via phone from Paris.

Since the duo started working together, Malik’s personal style has undergone something of an evolution, as the former boy bander replaced goofy grins and sporty jumpers with sleek silk bomber jackets from Louis Vuitton and shirting from Saint Laurent. “It’s keeping his aesthetic in keeping with his integrity of what his brand stands for and what he’s trying to do in this next chapter of his life,” said Rembert, and the next page appears to be one with a decidedly grown-up (read: sultry) subtext. The video, which was released at midnight on Thursday, has already garnered nearly 3 million views on YouTube. “It’s definitely edgy,” said Rembert. “It’s classic, minimal, cool. It’s dark.” And Rembert’s styling stayed true to all that, putting Malik in bomber jackets from Raf Simons and denim pieces from Tom Ford. “For the most part, it’s tailored,” said Rembert. “It’s a bit more grown-up and adult.” And while Malik might cut a mysterious figure in some all-black ensembles, he does have one bit of color: a ring with a blue stone. “[He’s] really into rings right now,” said Rembert, and Malik’s not alone: “He’s into bracelets and stacking jewelry—he kind of experiments a lot with jewelry. He’s edgy at heart—the same way Pharrell and Kanye West experiment with accessories.”

Another component in the video that needed little help was friend of Malik and model-of-the-moment Gigi Hadid. “She’s a bombshell,” said Rembert. “She’s naturally sexy. To keep her sexy is redundant,” said the stylist, who opted to put the 20-year-old runway regular in looks from Versace’s Spring collection and Lever Couture, a new Berlin-based label. “We wanted to keep her edgy and keep her true to what Versace means and what it stands for,” said Rembert, which didn’t provide much of a challenge, as Hadid is one of the newer faces of its most recent campaign. “[Versace] dresses the body. It’s legs and cleavage. We wanted to keep that feeling.”

That mood will no doubt translate into Malik’s forthcoming album, Mind of Mine, due out on March 25, a full year after his departure from One Direction. And here’s hoping the videos are as equally fashionable as they are catchy. In a grown-up way, of course.

Victoria Beckham Has the Fashion Antidote to Winter Blues

Floral prints aren’t exactly anything new, but designer Victoria Beckham is making us reconsider the ladylike motif as a mood-brightening antidote to the darker side of winter fashion. Eschewing her usual monochromatic style, the 41-year-old designer was spotted wearing a midi-length dress that was sprigged with a charming micro-bud pattern. It’s quite different from the flower prints she’s worn in the past; take the Pop Art version she donned this summer or the athletic-inspired iteration of the look she tried earlier this winter.

Of course, accessories are key when it comes to making the look blossom in the right way. In this case, color-coordinated stilettos from Francesco Russo and a zip pouch of her own design do the trick, while oversize shades and a gold Rolex amp up the posh pick-me-up factor further still.

No, French Girls Don’t Wear Berets! Jeanne Damas Delivers 7 Easy (And Shoppable) Lessons in Parisian Winter Chic

Over the weekend, snowbound, patiently waiting out Winter Storm Jonas, a pang of envy took over as I peered upon my French sistren in Paris attending men’s Fashion Week. Sure, gusts of chilly wind were likely blowing off the Seine, but how could you tell, watching those effortlessly chic gamines flit about between shows in thin statement-making floor-dusting overcoats, oversize flight jackets, and suede trenchcoats? No dipping temps could curtail their style, a lesson those of us stateside could use as a refresher in the throes of winter. We consulted the chicest of the chic, model Jeanne Damas, who gamely let us in on the French girl’s winter uniform, from the essential coat to the coolest knits—and, for once and for all, finally debunks the beret myth! Here, seven easy secrets to perfectly Parisian winter style—shop the looks in the slideshow above.

1. Winter Essentials: Borrowing From the Garçons
The caban—peacoat—is a timeless classic, like the long men’s trench or the pour la peau coat, but each has to reinvent itself each season. I love men’s coats, especially because they’re so large and they give plenty of room; the man’s coat remains one of my favorite classics.

2. Let the Fur Fly—To an Extent
I have a few vintage furs and have a particular weakness for Mongolian lamb fur—it’s quite ’70s—and I like the volume fur gives. Parisians wear less fur than New Yorkers, I think, because it’s not always well received in Paris. People here prefer restraint, and you do not necessarily feel at ease in furs. Personally, I do wear fur if it is very cold, because admittedly, there is nothing warmer. I like to wear them with jeans and flats—not too sophisticated for the day—and at night I love to wear very colorful or Sonia Rykiel dresses with them.

3. Sweater Chic
I have a passion for sweaters. Besides jeans, they are the clothes I have the most of in my closet. I must have a hundred! I cannot resist a nice sweater. My favorites are by Nathalie Dumeix, a Parisian designer. She makes perfect cashmeres, and this season she made a very wide V-neck cashmere menswear-inspired style: I bought them in every color. They are soft and go with everything and are perfectly cut. I love turtlenecks, they are very chic, but I don’t wear them very often because it bothers me to have something around the neck. For the colors, I love a navy blue sweater, red, pale pink, beige. I’m also a big fan of sweaterdresses. They’re so super comfortable, warm and sexy, With flat cuissardes—knee-high boots—it’s a very ’60s look.

4. A Scarf, Naturally! But Gloves? Not So Much
Beautiful dark gray or navy blue scarves are best when it is very cold—especially in cashmere. Otherwise, personally, I never wear hats, gloves, or other winter accessories. I find it is not cold enough in Paris. But I do find it quite chic to wear a wool scarf over a silk one.

5. How the French Do Winter White
Personally, I like the classic blue jeans, a little darker in winter and summer. But actually it is very chic to wear white jeans with a big man’s winter coat; in winter it’s more stylish than in summer, I think.

6. Comment Dites-Vous “Snow Boot” en Français?
To be honest, women do not wear snow boots in Paris, as it’s snowing no more than two days out of the year. But for skiing I have a pair of classic navy Moon Boots. And to be honest, I bought a pair of Ugg boots eight years ago in Australia. I wear them at home and very rarely—incognito—to get my baguettes. Don’t tell anybody!

7. And for the Love of God, No Berets!
I do not know anyone who wears a beret. The other day on a special “Parisian-style” shoot, there was an outfit with a beret, a trench, a marinière shirt, a cigarette, and a red lip, all of this photographed in front of Notre Dame—“hardly” cliché—and we realized that nobody knew how to place the beret on my head correctly. The French stylist had to look on the Internet to check how it is supposed to be worn!

Kendall and Kylie Jenner’s New Line Is Surprisingly Affordable

Kendall and Kylie Jenner might be the littlest sisters in the Kardashian-Jenner-West family, but that’s never stopped them from thinking big. Their latest brainchild, a collaborative fashion line called Kendall + Kylie, debuts on Revolve tomorrow, with a full rollout of stores, including Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom, on the agenda next month. Given that their brother-in-law has already left a sizable footprint on fashion (yes, Kanye, we’re looking at you!), and that the Jenners are also on first-name terms with some of the most influential designers (Riccardo, Olivier, Karl . . . ), we imagine getting advice for their new label wasn’t too tricky.

“This collection is really important to us because it’s a reflection of our point of view in the fashion world today,” says Kendall. “We’ve matured a lot in our tastes and aesthetics and are inspired by so many people in the industry, that creating this line is something we’re really proud of.” In fact, you only have to take a quick glance at the line to know that it was informed by the duo’s playful and ever-evolving everyday wardrobe: printed jumpsuits, skater dresses, and the kind of midriff-baring ensembles that give festival-girl style a grown-up sensibility. There are some pretty attention-grabbing shoes in the mix, too, which run the gamut of classic date-night stilettos to easy-walking espadrilles (soles that are comfy and chic enough to rival the much-coveted Yeezys, you might say). Thankfully, putting your best foot forward in the new collection won’t cost the earth either, with the opening price points starting at $68 for clothing and $100 for shoes. Those searching for lessons on how to style the line should look no further than the globe-trotting street style of the Jenner sisters themselves. “This collection is our most elevated and sophisticated, yet it’s so versatile. There’s something for everyone, no matter your age,” says Kylie. “Kendall and I are excited to start wearing it and can’t wait to see our friends in it, too.”

Emily Ratajkowski Brings Back the Boots-Over-Jeans Look

To tuck or not to tuck—that is the question. The answer isn’t always easy to address where boots and jeans are concerned. Popular with Sloane Ranger types in the ’80s and supermodels such as Kate Moss in the ’90s, the styling trick seems to be making a comeback thanks to the likes of Emily Ratajkowski, who was spotted out in Los Angeles yesterday wearing the look.

During the colder months it can be especially cozy to keep one’s jeans in place with a pair of practical and stylish boots, and as Ratajkowski demonstrates, the idea works just as well in milder California climes, too. Her feminine blouse and neck scarf have an alluring ’70s appeal paired with light-wash denim by MOTHER, though it’s the over-the-knee boot that takes the spotlight here, footwear that could be easily stepped up for evening. Finishing with retro-inspired accessories—a Gucci horsebit shoulder bag and round sunnies, in this case—isn’t a bad way to elevate an easy, everyday ensemble, either.

12 Times Gwyneth Paltrow Sparked ’90s Hair Envy

Long before she became a lifestyle guru by way of her website, Goop, espousing the benefits of the Tracy Anderson Method and popularizing catchphrases like “conscious uncoupling,” Gwyneth Paltrow was an up-and-coming actress and paparazzi darling. Bursting onto the ’90s Hollywood scene with her insouciant slouch and gangly elegance, it was her cool blonde beauty—along with her talent—that made her an instant hit.

Indeed, if present-day Gwyneth’s look is distinguished by the equally remarkable skin and foolproof power blowout that have become her signatures, her 20-something self was still deep in an experimental phase—especially when it came to her hair. Tearing through a lineup of early-decade signatures, from extreme side tendrils to floppy knots, she was the poster child for undone It-girl lengths.

The mid-’90s brought films like Emma and Se7en—in which Paltrow starred alongside her soon-to-be boyfriend Brad Pitt—and a slew of quirky updos that made her blonde lengths all the more memorable. Sliding Doors introduced Paltrow to the power of the pixie cut, a look that had her twinning with both Pitt and Paltrow’s dark-haired counterpart, Winona Ryder.

The actress eventually indulged in a brief fling with brunette before reclaiming her golden girl status at the end of the decade. In 1999, Paltrow took home an Academy Award for her role in Shakespeare in Love sporting a sleek, blonde knot at the nape of her swanlike neck—and inspired an entirely new, cultish definition of red carpet minimalism. Here, a look back at her best throwback ’90s beauty moments.

Logomania Is Back—Here’s How to Wear the Latest Street Style Trend

Fashion is in the midst of a sea change—or a few, as the case may be. Minimalism is on the wane, while romanticism reigns. Estate-sale maximalism has reached fever pitch, its presence now palpable even on the racks at Zara and Topshop, thanks to champions like Alessandro Michele at Gucci. Likewise, the industry on the whole seems to be taking a long, hard (or, as the case may more aptly be, cheeky and exuberant) look at institutional notions of “bad taste.” Chief among those notions? Logomania’s glorious return.

The Spring ’16 collections came branded to the hilt, from Loewe and Lanvin to Pucci and Vuitton (where the house’s signature monogram had seemingly leapt from the bags onto even more lust-worthy leather vests and jackets). Rather than the bougie branding of certain It items gone by—ye olde Dooney & Bourke, et al—these new iterations fly with playful irreverence in the face of what’s naff or not; in the case of Gosha Rubchinskiy, it’s a riff on Soviet-era consumer desires and the resulting, ersatz takes on American sportswear. The reason the trend has legs right now is that it’s less about status, and more about reappropriating the cool-girl possibilities of wearing a house logo in a way that’s not letting it wear you. Or as logo maestro Jeremy Scott told us: “I love the power of brand iconography, but like anything in fashion, you have to use the right ingredients at the right time.” How to strike that golden ratio in time for Spring? Our suggestions, in the slideshow.

While commuters on the East Coast navigate the snow mounds left behind by Winter Storm Jonas, those at the couture shows in Paris are finding chic ways to maneuver the cobblestone streets. Leading the pack is New Yorker Olivia Palermo, who seems to have traded in the daring thigh-high leather boots she wore to Dior yesterday for another statement leg-lengthening look. The 29-year-old frequently experiments with menswear-inspired fashion, and today’s ensemble was a nod to classical nautical style, namely the classic pants worn by seamen in uniform.

A simple ribbed turtleneck is the right partner to wide-legged trousers such as these. The brass buttons recall the polished look of French fashion houses such as Chanel and, more recently, Céline, while the traffic-stopping yellow stripe takes the piece in a fresh direction. As for finishing touches— shaggy fur vest, Analeena micro-lady day bag—they’re right in line with Palermo’s stealth street style approach.

Are Heels Suddenly on the Rise? Sarah Mower Predicts the Shoe Trend You’ll See at Fashion Week

News flash! In the last two weeks, somewhere on the road between London and Paris, an epiphany has struck me with all the certainty of a Damascene conversion: I’m feeling heels again. This has happened as quickly as the few days’ span between the menswear shows and the couture collections, where I’m still embedded on Vogue.com reporting duties. You will need to take this on trust, in the manner of a Secret Service communiqué from behind the lines, because none of the evidence I’ve picked up is yet allowed to be released in pictures.

But here it is:

1. I went to see the Central Saint Martins MA class of 2019 prepare their graduation shows for London Fashion Week. Regardless of the clothes, three out of four students—bellwethers of British cool—are showing some form of heel.

2. I was invited by Shayne Oliver to his experimental Hood By Air menswear show in Paris on Sunday—a show he was so determined to keep private that you had to agree to have a sticker put over your phone camera upon entrance. What I can report is this: The participants were all striding around at top speed in thigh-high, pointed stiletto-heeled boots.

3. Today I saw the first collection Demna Gvasalia has done for Balenciaga—Pre-Fall 2019, which they’re calling his Collection Zero for the house. No pictures can be released until May, but I am here to pass you the word: pointy thigh-high stiletto boots!

Now, I speak as someone who’s been so grateful and happy to have been fashion-endorsed to wear sneakers, flat sandals, and the occasional mid-heel for the past two years. The whole of fashion has reconfigured around what’s been going on at ground level: Céline-endorsed Vans, fur-filled backless Gucci loafers, all that. It’s been so easy to get around lately. But when a whole cohort of young people comes up saying something different—well, I take notice. Shoes are proportion and attitude-shifters. Sticking my neck out here, but this is my prediction: Come the womenswear shows next month, avant-garde heels are going to be out in force.

Since cinematic muses like Sophia Loren and Monica Vitti were on the scene, fashion-forward Italian women have long been an obsession in fashion circles. While daring fashion editors like Anna Dello Russo and Sozzanis Carla and Franca have long thrilled the blogosphere, this season’s menswear shows’ front rows showed a new generation of Italian nationals making the street style rounds. Blessed with pitch-perfect personal style, access to the very best of luxury fashion, and a certain enviable Italian love of the good life, this newly minted girl squad is worth paying attention to all fashion month.

With her waist-length, pin-straight black hair, Gilda Ambrosio makes a strong case for the center-part revival, but it’s her off-kilter style that truly gets your attention. Stepping out in straight-off-the-runway pieces like Loewe’s silver tasseled sweater or Etro’s pastel striped fur coat is one way to get the attention of photographers, but Ambrosio looks great even when the paparazzi isn’t watching.

While the blustery cold of Park City, Utah, has long made the shapeless, ho-hum utilitarian ski parka de rigueur for most at the Sundance Film Festival, actress Chloë Sevigny proved this past weekend that one never has to neglect her cool to battle freezing weather. In not one, but two chic wintertime statement coats, the Love & Friendship star brought her O.G. downtown flair straight to the slopes. To promote her new period drama with costar Kate Beckinsale, Sevigny threw on a plush, vintage-inspired Coach shearling, which she layered with a cream ruffle-necked knit tucked into a pair of cropped tailored denim flares. Louis Vuitton’s sleek brown patent-leather curved heel boots were right in step with her polished low bun and gold hoops.

Sevigny’s outerwear game was bested only by the cropped black shearling-lined flight jacket she wore a day later to the Yoga Hosers premiere. Throwing that piece over an all-black ensemble of a sheer turtleneck, languid trousers, and shiny black combat boots, the 41-year-old street style star showed Sundance just how to do wintertime chill.

It was just last week that Gwyneth Paltrow showed up to a glamorous event in Austria sporting a sweaterdress by Michael Kors Collection, a cozy take on red carpet style. And leave it to model-of-the-moment Gigi Hadid to up the ante on that idea for cocktail hour.

Unlike the classic body-con styles of seasons past, Hadid’s ribbed tunic-style Designers Remix dress has a flattering, body-skimming silhouette. Besides being a warm and inviting layer in the cold, the dress also coordinates nicely with Hadid’s elephant gray Stuart Weitzman boots, which are proving to be a favorite for the 20-year-old jet-setter. Clearly, Hadid isn’t afraid to put her best (and most chicly clad) foot forward as often as she can.

This weekend saw the men’s collections wrap in Paris, but that didn’t stop Olivier Rousteing from hosting one of the season’s most-buzzed-about fetes. After his dazzling show, the young talent brought together the latest additions to his squad, including Lucky Blue Smith, alongside longtime members such as Alessandra Ambrosio and Isabeli Fontana. With everyone ready to let their hair down, Le Carmen in the Pigalle acted as the ideal venue for the bright young things of the runway to boogie down until the wee hours.

And just as quickly as it ended, so the next phase began. The Spring 2019 Haute Couture shows kicked off in Paris last night and Stylebop.com fashion director Leila Yavari and Next Management Europe president Saif Mahdhi hosted a dinner for the second year at iconic Caviar Kaspia, in Place de la Madeleine. Friends gathered to “celebrate the New Year, to celebrate the industry and being in one of the most beautiful cities in the world,” as Mahdhi said. Guests indulged in Norwegian smoked salmon, Kaspia’s signature baked potato topped with Imperial Baeri caviar, and raspberries and wild strawberries, all washed down with Kaspia’s selections of vodkas.

Other guests included models Arizona Muse, Binx Walton, and Isabeli Fontana; Chloé CEO Geoffroy de la Bourdonnaye; Virginie Courtin-Clarins (in Mugler); David Koma; Caroline de Maigret (in Lanvin); Olympia Le-Tan; Olivia Palermo (in a Tibi shirt, Proenza Schouler skirt, and Tabitha Simmons shoes) and Johannes Huebl; and John Nollet (in Lanvin). After dinner, everyone got onto their feet and followed Anna Cleveland to an improvised dance floor, where Wladimir and Agathe deejayed the night away.

As the temperatures dip to arctic levels, the concept of color can seem less and less appealing. Reaching for a black or navy Canada Goose may be the easiest course of action, but Karlie Kloss proved today that there are ways to maintain a tropical touch—even with a blizzard approaching. Taking to the streets of New York last Friday in a red-and-white-embroidered oversize cardigan by Ermanno Scervino and cropped jeans, Kloss channeled a lighter, brighter time of year. Though her best warm-weather accessory may be the cup of coffee she’s holding, Kloss’s coordinating red sunglasses are a close second. Topping off her look with a brand-new Miu Miu bag and a pair of Adidas Gazelles, the supermodel made her daily trek to class a study in seasonal, mood-elevating chic.

Evan Rachel Wood on Tilda Swinton, HBO’s Westworld, and How to Know When You’ve Found The One

It’s hard to predict what Evan Rachel Wood will do next. The chameleonic actress has been tapped to play a shoplifting 13-year-old, a temperamental opera singer, and a woman living in a future where artificial intelligence blends in seamlessly with the real world for HBO’s forthcoming series Westworld—this all from a girl who calls music her first love. When she’s not filming a critically acclaimed series or groundbreaking movie, she might be found singing “Wrecking Ball” at the top of her lungs to friends in her basement karaoke lounge, writing, spending time with her 2-and-a-half-year-old son, or finding other means of “staying creative on my own terms.” It’s this pioneering spirit that has won her a role as the face of Gucci Guilty Eau, a lilac-, lychee-, and musk-spiked fragrance she describes as giving the wearer “a strong sense of self, confidence, and independence,” descriptors she could very well apply to herself. To find out more about what’s next for the 28-year-old actress, we hopped on a call with Wood to talk about the importance of applying perfume straight to the skin, why she’ll be shaving her head when she’s 50, and how to tell when you’ve found the one.

How do you like to put on perfume?
I spray it into the air and walk into it. I think it’s good to put it on bare skin when your pores are still open [like after the shower], so it’s on your clothes, but it’s also [still there] if clothes aren’t in the equation. I think the senses ignite imagination. It can help make memories—you leave your mark with someone a little more prominently when you have a signature scent. The original Gucci Guilty is a bold, daring, take-control-of-the-situation vibe. And now, it’s evolved into a more romantic scent—ethereal and soft and sexy, but still grounded. I feel naked when I leave the house without it.

What else do you make sure to do before you leave the house?
Mascara is another thing, if I forget to put it on, I’m like: Man, that was a good day, but it would have been great if I had had mascara! I love CoverGirl’s volumizing, non-clumping mascara. That’s essential to me. Eyes are just as important as scent [when it comes to] sensuality. I like to accentuate them a bit. When the lights are low, a smoky eye is a good way to draw people in.

Do you have a trick for the perfect smoky eye?
I’ve been really into using an emerald green pencil, then taking a brush or sponge and smudging it [to] soften it up. I wait to apply any makeup under my eyes [until] I do my [eyeliner] first. Then you can clean up the line and make it really perfect.

You also wear a bold lip a lot—how do you maintain it?
When I do a really bold lip, I notice that when I try to line it really perfectly on the [edge of] my mouth, it runs. If I put it inside the line, it will then bleed to the edge and not get really crazy. I learned that by trial and error. I love all the NARS shades, and they have really long wear. My makeup artist gave one to me.

What else have you learned on set?
I loved Mildred [Pierce]—the old glamour and getting to wear the costumes and the hair. I got really into mastering the Clara Bow lip for a while, which is just drawing a heart on your mouth and not bringing your lipstick to the edge. I also loved Running With Scissors. [They had me in] peacock eyeshadow, blue mascara, and hot pants. I probably kept wearing that blue mascara. [But the most important thing I’ve learned on set] is not to splash water directly on your face [when you’re washing it] or in the shower. It can disturb your pH. Instead, I get facial sponges or use a hot towel to loosen all of my makeup and my pores. I put it in the microwave with eucalyptus [oil to heat it up]. Then use the towel as gently as possible. Don’t be in a hurry to get your makeup off. I use [a cleanser] from Acure [Organics] that’s less harsh. But if I’m on set and don’t have it, I’ll use olive oil and a hot towel. I’ll call the kitchen at the hotel and say, “Hey, you don’t have any olive oil, do you?”

Your skin is pristine. Tell us about your routine.
I have to change up my routine every year because my skin gets used to it. I will find a miracle product for a while, and then my skin adapts and it won’t work anymore. [Right now] I wear La Roche-Posay [Anthelios] SPF 60 every day, and I always use St. Ives collagen-booster moisturizer. It smells great, and it helps your skin not lose elasticity. There’s an awesome tinted moisturizer by Stila that gives you just enough coverage—it warms you up and gives you a sheen and helps nourish your skin. The less you do, the better.

Do you ever do skin treatments?
If I’m home alone not doing anything, I watch Friends and I make my own masks. Manuka honey is really amazing for sensitive, acne-prone skin. I put it all over my face with cinnamon—that gives it a more pasty quality. You look like you just stuck your head in chocolate pudding. If I have something weird on my face, like Mario Badescu spot treatment, you either love me or you don’t. [laughs] If someone can love you with stuff on your face, then you’ve found [The One].

Who are your beauty icons?
I love [David] Bowie. I’ve always loved androgynous glam-rock looks. And I feel a weird kinship with Tilda Swinton—she’s tall and pale and hasn’t conformed. She’s like a female Bowie. She’s my inspiration—her and Annie Lennox and Patti Smith. I want to be rocking suits and shaving my head and dyeing [my hair] orange when I’m 50.

The actress was spotted in Los Angeles this week with her shoulder-length layers sporting a halo of wispy flyaways that seemed to take a cue from her mohair sweater. And while we suspect she can thank the SoCal breeze for her fuzzy texture, East Coasters who are spending the weekend waiting out Jonas with the heat cranked up high can still achieve the perfect air-dry—with the added benefit of an extra dose of winter static.

While the art of twinning is a subtle craft, Kendall Jenner and Snoop Dogg may have mastered it this week. Instagramming a pic from the set of Kocktails With Khloé, the model and the rapper showed up in matching shades of brown—Jenner donning a pair of tawny high-waisted trousers for sister Khloé’s talk show premiere episode and Snoop Dogg sporting an oversize knit in a deeper shade for the occasion—they threw up corresponding peace signs to make it official.

Do You Have Winter Blonde Addiction? How Dakota Johnson and More Lighten Up Gradually

While it may be true that every woman should go platinum on a whim at least once in her life, there’s something to be said for gradually dialing up the bleach until you’ve achieved your perfect shade of blonde.

It’s a stealth strategy that Dakota Johnson has made her own. The actress was recently spotted with her current brunette shade brightened with the kind of subtle highlights that feel like a ray of sunshine during the colder months.

And she’s not alone: Amber Heard has supercharged her sandy blonde over the past few months with the help of thick, hand-painted pieces, while Emma Roberts found out firsthand that a short crop can easily handle a minor peroxide job and even benefits from the added texture.

Meanwhile, Kiernan Shipka’s new buttery shade is fueling our dark-brows-with-blonde-hair obsession and Saoirse Ronan’s cool-toned waves provide a winning halo effect just in time for awards season.

Natalie Westling Is Modeling’s Original Skater Girl and She Has the Vans Campaign to Prove It

Since her arrival on the modeling scene in 2014, it’s been apparent that Natalie Westling was something else. The combination of her angelic features, flame red hair, and tomboy attitude made her a favorite of Marc Jacobs, Hedi Slimane, Miuccia Prada, Tom Ford, Phoebe Philo, Nicolas Ghesquière, and nearly every other big-name designer out there, though despite her successes, she prefers to keep a relatively low profile. Her Instagram, which boasts more than 46,000 followers, hasn’t been updated in 10 weeks—basically a lifetime in Internet years—though she continues to be a model-of-the-moment, walking in exclusive shows and booking top campaigns. So what’s Westling been up to in her downtime? Skating.

The Arizona native first picked up a skateboard at age 3. Her dedication to the sport is so extreme that her first two tattoos are emblematic of her passion: Her left arm reads “skate” in graffiti lettering, and on her right there’s a Vans logo. Pretty bold for a model to dedicate herself to a label that thoroughly, but Westling’s no joke when it comes to skateboarding. Her latest modeling coup finds her inking a deal with the iconic skate company to be a brand ambassador for its Sk8-Hi shoe silhouette campaign to celebrate the brands 50th anniversary. Vogue.com caught up with Westling on the occasion of her first Vans lookbook to talk skating, modeling, and that tattoo.

Earlier this week Kate Moss stepped out in a black-and-white-striped statement fur that instantly caught our eye, and now it appears that Mary-Kate Olsen has upped the ante. One half of the sister duo behind The Row, the 29-year-old designer is known for her fearless fashion choices and isn’t afraid to take risks with her everyday wardrobe or her red carpet looks. And earlier today, leaving her office in Manhattan, the newlywed showed just how well a shaggy fur can work with an off-duty urban uniform.

The lynx fur coat elevates Olsen’s black top and skinny jeans, as well as being about as warm and cozy as outerwear gets. Amping up the Western vibe are heeled buckle boots and classic aviators—what you might call country- (and city-) strong style.

With their age-defying looks, they appear more like twin sisters than anything—which is no more evident than when they often hit the red carpet together.

Practically since Kravitz’s birth, the bohemian style icon and her pint-sized doppelgänger have always shared a similar sense of style, gravitating toward darkly romantic floor-skimming gowns, layers of hardware jewelry, and statement-making braids that have plenty of rock and earth goddess vibes—making it appear that style is simply a family affair. Here, a look back at the mother-daughter modeling duo’s best red carpet moments.

The Best Fashion Instagrams of the Week: Zendaya, Lena Dunham, and Kate Hudson!

This week, our Instagram feed was awash with color, and plenty of our most fashionable follows painted the town red, blue, green, yellow, and any variant shade thereof. Tapping into what she called her “artsy” side, Zendaya snapped a contemplative pic in front of an abstract art canvas that perfectly matched her Bauhaus-inspired Peter Pilotto frock. In fact, it was hard to tell where the painting ended and the stylish shape-shifting look began.

Posing under pink and purple fluorescent lighting with friends Katy Perry and Nicole Richie at this week’s Stella McCartney Pre-Fall 2019 presentation in Los Angeles, it seems that Kate Hudson was colorful, carefree, and lit in the truest sense of the word. Then, of course, there was Lena Dunham, who wore her support for presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton on her sleeve in a red, white, and blue all-knit sweaterdress.

It may roll on interminably, without an end date in sight, but when it comes to noteworthy new models, Pre-Fall is the gift that keeps on giving. With each new lookbook, brands introduce their followers to fresh faces and provide the models selected with some much-needed exposure. Given that the girls picked for Pre-Fall often go on to do well during couture and ready-to-wear, the casting often serves to foreshadow the next generation of most-wanted models. Get to know them here!

So we weren’t exactly surprised when we met Lou and Nils Schoof, a brother-sister duo with serious sartorial appeal and chemistry to match. Lou, 20, is a doll-like character seemingly straight from a Vermeer, except that her hair is sheared off into an asymmetrical bob. Her brother, Nils, 17, is a foosball champion, and just as beautiful, with a slicked-back coif reminiscent of that of a matador, concave cheekbones, and a cherubic pout. And while their discovery story is relatively standard—“I was discovered on a train to Berlin,” says Lou. “Nils was later discovered on my Instagram”—posing together is anything but. The duo seem to have a captivating, bound-by-blood, electric bond, visible even in their dual Instagram account. And that you certainly don’t find every day.

Though Lou has several editorial shoots and a Blumarine campaign under her belt, Nils is just starting out. Nonetheless, the pair managed to score the cover of Ukrainian Vogue, which was shot 20 minutes outside of their northern German town. And though it was one of Nils’s first shoots, it came together naturally. “Sometimes I think it is a challenge,” says Lou. “But at the end, what people really love is that we are close to each other. It is a real story because there is a connection between us. There are limits for the connection with strangers. I think it becomes a very different shoot when we shoot together. It is nice.” But modeling together doesn’t come without the occasional sibling spat. “The other day we were taking photos of each other in the park. He called me ‘choleric,’ like when people scream at each other!” says Lou. “When you are really close to a person, you sometimes are allowed to talk the way you feel. It is like true feelings. When you are stressed, you show them that you are stressed out, and when you are happy, you show them that you are happy. Nothing is fake.”
And there is more where that brooding kinship came from: Nils and Lou have a younger sister. “She isn’t ready to model yet, but people want to shoot her all the time,” says Lou. “I’m counting the days till she is ready to go with us.” So are we.

These Are the Iconic Wardrobe Pieces You Need for Spring

There’s nothing quite like a great vintage score, stumbling on a gem in a flea market bin, maybe the perfect Perfecto sandwiched between bad polyblend dresses. Still, for those of us feeling stretched a hair thin between work and personal life, the marathon trawling entailed just isn’t in the cards. Enter Icons, a new, gender-neutral range of quintessentially cool pieces (Levi’s 501s, moto jackets, army surplus coats, et cetera) curated by Jamie Haller and Nick Friedberg of cult denim brand NSF. Launching exclusively with Barneys New York in April (with a preview tonight), the lineup is one that the Los Angeles–based duo have entertained for some time. Haller tells Vogue.com: “It’s something Nick and I have been talking about for years. We are both personally kind of obsessed with shopping vintage, and we’re always bringing our finds into the office and getting excited about them.” But it wasn’t until they stumbled upon a veritable unicorn of a vintage dealer in L.A. (“a gold mine of amazing vintage pieces in enough quantity that we could consider selling them wholesale,” that is) that that idea became a reality.

Outerwear is the emphasis for the offering—Sherpa-lined jackets, shearling denim numbers, a 10-button peacoat, Belgian army jacket, Swedish military coats—but Icons doesn’t skimp when it comes to other wardrobe essentials, either: see ’70s deadstock tees and those aforementioned dreamy 501s. Styles will range from roughly $195 to $595, and if you see a style you like, well, don’t sleep on it. “We’re offering something where we know that we can fill 50 pieces or 100 pieces,” Haller says. “And the people we’re selling to know that, and once it sells out, it’s off the line and something amazing will take its place.” Consider yourself warned.

From Athleisure to Artisans, 5 Things to Watch For at Pitti Uomo This Week

This week, from January 12 to 15, Pitti Uomo returns to the Fortezza da Basso in Florence, Italy, bringing with it a slew of well-dressed gents and noteworthy events. The selection of guest designers Juun.J, Marco de Vincenzo, and Yosuke Aizawa, who will present a project from Adidas Originals x White Mountaineering, and the announcement of the Generation(s) theme exploring the relationship between nostalgia and the new have already created a substantial buzz, but several new and expanded programs announced today gave menswear fanatics plenty more to look forward to at the four-day festival. Here, we outline the five can’t-miss happenings set for this week’s affair.

1. The International Woolmark Prize menswear finals arrive in Florence.
For the first time ever, the International Woolmark Prize finals for menswear were held in Florence. Six contestants from six different regions—Siki Im from the United States, Munsoo Kwon from South Korea, Agi & Sam from the British Isles, Jonathan Christopher from the Netherlands, P.Johnson from Australia, and Suketdhir Dhir from India—presented collections utilizing Australian merino in the Villa Favard. Today, Suketdhir Dhir was announced as the winner and will receive AU$100,000, as well as the chance for placements in Harvey Nichols, 10 Corso Como, Saks Fifth Avenue, MatchesFashion.com, and other international retailers.

2. Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari are launching a Toilet Paper x Seletti pop-up shop.
The Italian artists will bring their singular brand of irreverence and wit to Pitti Uomo, courtesy of a temporary store that will sell their Toilet Paper x Seletti products.

3. Couture craftsmanship takes center stage.
If there was any question that craft is having a resurgence, Pitti Uomo’s new showcase, Make, should settle it. The event promises exclusively handmade goods from 40 international brands, spotlighting new techniques and ideas in the world of artisanal production.

4. A showcase of made-in-Africa products will return for the second season.
Following the success of last season’s Constellation Africa showcase, Pitti Uomo is bringing back the project in partnership with the International Trade Centre’s Ethical Fashion Initiative. A collection of goods made throughout the continent will be on display for buyers, press, and guests to see.

5. The athleisure event is bigger than ever before.
Proof that athleisure is here to stay: Pitti Uomo’s I Play activewear showcase is the biggest it has ever been, featuring brands like Herschel Supply Co., WeSC, and Puffa. The event has grown so large, it’s now taking over nearly 6,500 square feet of the Cavaniglia Pavilion, making it one of the week’s more spacious events—and without question the one with the most jogger pants.

7 Models Who Prove That a Good Makeover Can Change Your Life

At the start of a new year, change is on everyone’s minds, and fashion thrives on this spirit of reinvention. For the women in front of the camera, a well-timed makeover can take their careers to the next level. Many models take a page out of Linda Evangelista’s book and reinvent their look via new hair color or cut, but only a select few have pulled off the complete 180 in terms of their image. A total redo serves not only to change the immediate aesthetics of a model; it can also change the way they’re perceived by casting directors, the powers that be, and the public at large. The right shift at the right time opens doors, taking a plucky young punk and turning her into a Victoria’s Secret Angel, or giving a girl next door some much needed editorial edge. Take a look at seven of the most interesting model evolutions, and see how these stars have used personal style to keep the industry buzzing. Who knows, it might inspire your own.

Abbey Lee

Arriving on the scene fresh from Melbourne, Abbey Lee was the human embodiment of the industry’s fixation on all things boho. Wide-eyed, with long brown hair and an air of innocence, Lee was fashion’s favorite flower-child face. As she evolved within her career, and as the industry moved on from its bohemian rhapsody, so did Lee’s look, shifting from glamorous, platinum-haired goth during her runway heyday to her current taste for pastel hair and sleek, starlet-worthy gowns.

Galvan, eveningwear’s cool new kid on the block, is about to enjoy some serious limelight. While the London-based brand has in the past nabbed some top-tier red carpet credits (Jennifer Lawrence, Sienna Miller, and Rihanna), the 2019 awards season is poised to see quite a few more. Opening Ceremony, along with fashion’s foremost purveyors of sparkle, Swarovski, has tapped Galvan to collaborate on a capsule collection for both Hollywood’s elite and mere mortals alike. The partnership will be serving up custom Swarovski-encrusted numbers for starlets, as well as an OC-exclusive range of Galvan ready-to-wear looks. (Humberto Leon and Carol Lim’s tastemaking multibrand was one of the line’s early stockists, since Spring ’15.)

This evening will kick things off with a Hollywood dinner to fete the styles, and a trunk show to follow at the store’s Los Angeles flagship tomorrow. Says Galvan CEO Katherine Holmgren of that certain OC magic: “Not only is it the epitome of L.A. cool, but the company has also reinvented what fashion means for the modern woman—both how and where she wears it.” As to which leading ladies will opt for the styles at blockbuster events like the Oscars? Well, you’ll have to tune in and see.

Since its inception on the tennis courts during the early 1900s, when it was referred to as the jersey petit piqué (courtesy of René Lacoste), the polo shirt has been the starchy yet sportily casual marker for good manners, polished prep, and an above-average golf handicap.

Cut to the early 2000s: The shirt hit the pinnacle of cheesiness, complete with triple-popped collars, layered in all the shades of the neon rainbow, becoming the frat bro uniform, worn to every class and keg stand, or with more than a touch of irony by the likes of a young Kanye West, touring for his smash album The College Dropout. Cue the Mean Girls moment where Lindsay Lohan’s character tries to assimilate into the suburban social scene of “we only wear pink on Wednesdays” by throwing on an oversize polo borrowed from a classmate, its ill fit both in direct contrast to the Juicy Couture ensembles of her new friends and an immediate signifier of how little she cares about clothes.
The Art of Elysium Annual Heaven Gala and Sean Penn Supports Help Haiti Home

Awards season is in full swing in Los Angeles, celebrity spottings are even more frequent than usual and nary a facial appointment is available in town. On the eve before the Golden Globes, the Art of Elysium hosted their annual Heaven Gala with Dame Vivienne Westwood and Andreas Kronthaler as the creative visionaries. “Andreas made this dress for me in five minutes,” Westwood remarked about her ensemble for the evening. The husband-and-wife duo are also creative and sartorial partners. Wild Daughter, an East London–based punk band, performed onstage in the center of the room during cocktails, and as Amber Valletta, Christina Hendricks, Zendaya, and more filled the space, they quickly noticed that the bassist was wearing nothing but black leather briefs, completely baring his backside, and thigh-high black leather boots to match. Dree Hemingway even got up close and personal with the band to take a few photos on her iPhone.

After several songs and cocktails, guests were invited in to Heaven to take their seats at the plywood dinner tables blanketed in a tangle of flowers and greenery. Amber Heard and Johnny Depp cozied up next to one another while plates of salmon were passed around, and a dancer from the San Francisco ballet gracefully moved across the stage.

Meanwhile across town, Sean Penn, along with Bryan Lourd and Sean and Alexandra Parker, gathered a large group of friends together at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills to support his organization, Help Haiti Home. Justin Bieber, Suki Waterhouse, and Leonardo DiCaprio were all surprised when Madonna took the stage to perform “La Vie en Rose” on a ukulele that was sold at an auction later in the evening. The night drew to a close with another surprise musical performance by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and everyone headed home to get beauty rest for their Golden Globes preparations the next day.

All the Best Fashion Trends at the Golden Globes: Jennifer Lawrence, Brie Larson, and More

The 73rd annual Golden Globes are underway, and while the stars are toasting each other with Moët bubbly inside the ballroom at the Beverly Hilton hotel, the red carpet was filled with some of fashion’s most forward-thinking trends, all pulled straight from the Spring collections.

Showing some skin on the red carpet isn’t exactly revolutionary, but Sunday night found all manner of toned obliques on display, with Brie Larson, Kate Hudson, and Jennifer Lawrence all leading the pack. While Larson’s custom Calvin Klein gilded column made her into something of a human statuette, it was Hudson who most fully embraced the concept of a black-tie crop top in a Michael Kors Collection ensemble. Jennifer Lawrence modernized an Old Hollywood silhouette in crimson Christian Dior with waist-whittling overlay, topped off by a high-wattage diamond Chopard choker.

In direct contrast was the cascade of snow-white frocks on the red carpet. Alicia Vikander’s bib collar Louis Vuitton number lent The Danish Girl star a prim vibe, while micro-embellishments amped up the A-list factor. Taraji P. Henson’s custom Stella McCartney column dress featured luxe trimmings fit for her role as Empire’s—and television’s—reigning queen, while Laverne Cox was all Hollywood royalty in a flowing white gown, and Saoirse Ronan took a fresh approach to Grecian style in Saint Laurent’s demi-caped interpretation.

But leave it to the style supernovas co-starring in Carol to bring red carpet femininity to new heights. Cate Blanchett’s fringed Givenchy frock proved to be both fashion-forward and fete-ready, while Rooney Mara’s elegantly undone Victorian Alexander McQueen gown was every inch as regal as it looked on the runway. With both stars turning up in the palest shade of pink, and plenty more red carpets ahead, one can’t help but hope for more stealthily coordinated sartorial moments to come.

Ladies and gentlemen, we give you Lady Gaga. The American Horror Story: Hotel star stunned on the Golden Globes red carpet this evening in a custom black velvet Atelier Versace dress with padded hips that gave her the ultimate Marilyn Monroe–esque hourglass figure.

Adding to the glamour of Gaga’s look was her decision to forgo a necklace, despite her gown’s décolletage-revealing off-the-shoulder cut. Instead, she chose stacked diamond bracelets and glamorous cocktail earrings—all the better to show off her bright blonde retro bob. Standing beside her was fiancé Taylor Kinney in a proper black tuxedo, and together the couple hearkened back to the heyday of Old Hollywood style. We’d call it a high note for red carpet style overall.

Blue Ivy and North West, Listen Up! Gucci’s New Kids Collection Is Red Carpet–Ready

There’s a petite and equally head-turning version of the ruffled crimson gown Cate Blanchett wore to Singapore Fashion Week. The same nerdy schoolgirl beret and pussy-bow blouse Gia Coppola wore to the brand’s show last season has been dwarfed in size—though the look still stands tall. And as far as gentlemanly smarts go, the natty geometric-print suit Harry Styles recently took for a spin has been tailored to fit future boy banders. It’s all enough to make you wish the collection went up to a size 16. “It’s no longer a ‘kid collection’ but a full, beautiful collection of ready-to-wear and accessories that has been shrunken down,” says Vogue.com’s Anny Choi. “It’s perfect for any celeb kids attending the red carpet: They can look chic and grown-up, and even match with Mom!” And with the Golden Globes this Sunday, there’s no telling whether a little star in the making will give the collection its red carpet debut.

If Generation Z’s de facto style harbingers, North West, Blue Ivy, and Harper Beckham, have taught us anything, it’s that style simply has no age limits these days. No sartorial risk is too big for pint-sized fashion enthusiasts anymore, especially when you consider tots who are regular fixtures on the red carpet and Fashion Week’s front row. Which is why Gucci’s newly released Cruise 2019 kids collection couldn’t have come at a better time: In shrinking down the whimsical ensembles that celebrities wore for their biggest red carpet moments last year, Alessandro Michele is bringing Italian style to an entirely new—and super-adorable—generation.

Spring 2019 Ready-to-Wear

Stuart Vevers walks to work at Coach along the High Line every day, lucky thing. The aerial park, with its grasses and fig trees and urban butterflies, tracks across the west side of Manhattan as one of the most joyously human examples of industrial repurposing in our times. The new Coach offices are under construction near the end of the High Line at 30th Street, as it happens, and it was adjacent to that location, on a perfectly sunny September afternoon, that the company invited the press, buyers, and celebrities to step along the old railway tracks and into a temporary grass-planted space to see the first big runway show Coach has staged for New York Fashion Week.

As it also happens, 2019 marks the 75th anniversary of Coach, “So,” said Vevers, “it felt like a good moment to show we have confidence.” The values of Coach have always been purely American and pragmatic, a company proud to fulfill everyday needs. But in the 21st century, Vevers is one of those designers who questions how, and whether, that democratic ideal in fashion is reaching young people at attainable prices, and in ways that will excite them. His answer was to think about “a magpie girl who goes on road trips, picking up Western things, but also might steal from her granny’s closet on the Upper East Side.”

If so, granny was a bit of a ’70s bohemian, because this girl’s dresses were all made from micro-floral multicolored patchworks, though they were definitely a lot shorter than they were at Woodstock, and with an easily relatable pull-on-and-go attitude about them. Still, Vevers is not someone who will go off on narrative raptures about fictional muses. Refreshingly, he’s a down-to-earth product designer who is good at thinking about such things as what a functional cut-down cowboy boot should look like for a customer’s money: i.e., comfortable, with a lot of collaged fun thrown into the bargain. “I don’t think I’ve ever put a heel on the runway at Coach,” he said, laughing. “I just want to make it feel light in spirit and bring some joy to it, and maybe a sense of the American outdoors.”

It worked. Coach is, of course, a great American bag company—and there were plenty of respectfully traditional saddle-leather hobo shapes reprised in the show—but it also needs to convert a new generation to its faith. And, oddly, on the High Line today it felt as if Stuart Vevers, an Englishman abroad, is the person who might be able to see exactly how to do that.

Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, and Claudia Schiffer Join the Balmain Army

Olivier Rousteing’s #BalmainArmy is in expansion mode. Yes, he already has 2 million troops on Instagram, which says nothing of the mononymous celebrities who wear his clothes and support his vision (Kim, Kanye, Rihanna, Gigi, Kendall, et al.), but Rousteing’s Spring campaign for the house brings a new demographic into the mix: ’90s fashion icons. Shot in black and white by Steven Klein are Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, and Claudia Schiffer posing in the designer’s body-conscious and ruffled Spring creations.

“It’s a new chapter for Balmain,” began Rousteing on the phone from Paris. “Sometimes people are confused and think it’s all about social media and Instagram. Balmain has a deep soul, and it’s not only about followers. It’s about dreams and love, and I think with this campaign I’m going to show that and go back to its roots. This campaign is about what makes me love fashion, and these three women are exactly that. These three women are what made me love fashion yesterday, make me love fashion today, and are going to make me love fashion in the future.”

For the designer, the campaign was a long time coming. Reflecting on his youth in France, he remembered pinning Peter Lindbergh photos and candid backstage snaps of the trio onto his mood boards. “I felt like I was dreaming as I was watching the photo shoot, because I knew it was going to be something iconic that I would never forget,” he said. “You realize working with them, it’s another way than working with the models of today. They know so much about themselves. Their career is so strong. They know their bodies so well. They move at the same time that the camera is moving. Steven also knows them so well, so it was such a good synergy.”

The shoot also provided the three legends some much-appreciated time to catch up. “I loved seeing Cindy and Naomi again. Every time it’s like I’m continuing a conversation from the day before. We have experienced some amazing times together. Cindy and I talked about family life as we had our hair and makeup done, and Naomi, who still has the best body in the business, made us laugh,” recalled Schiffer, with Crawford adding, “I can’t wait to see the pics—[they] will probably give me a little more fashion credibility with my daughter!”

As for how the existing #BalmainArmy will take to the new campaign, chances are you’ll find their reactions plastered across social media within the hour. To those who say that a trio of supes is a departure from Balmain’s standard Generation Y fare, Rousteing is quick to remind, “All the people who love Balmain have this nostalgia of the power of fashion in the ’90s when models were iconic—and this is always what I push. . . . When you love Balmain, you love Cindy, you love Naomi, and you love Claudia. It’s natural because they are iconic, they are powerful, and they are strong—and they make a lot of people love fashion.” Amen to that.

Find exclusive behind-the-scenes images of the campaign shoot above, and a first look at the trio in action below.

The 5 Golden Rules of Athleisure: Is It Really Acceptable to Wear Yoga Pants All Day Long?

Blame the designer athleisure boom or the annual glut of New Year’s resolutions to hit the gym on the regular, but this month you can expect to see even more women than usual wearing workout gear. Be it on the school run, in the line for morning coffee, over a business lunch, or even drinks, performancewear as everydaywear for women of all ages is becoming de rigueur. “It seems that it is now totally acceptable to wear your outfit all day, every day,” says studio owner Simone De La Rue. “Even if you haven’t worked out.”

“I think wearing your athleticwear all day is more than acceptable,” says SoulCyclecofounder Julie Rice, whose devotees are notorious for showing up to class decked out head to toe in the studio’s branded leggings, sports bras, tanks, and bandanas. “It’s a trend. People of all ages are wearing their workoutwear all day now, whether it’s leggings with a longer coat and a scarf, or someone younger wearing a cropped T-shirt with a denim jacket and some high-heeled boots. People shop for their athleticwear thinking, How can I wear this from the studio to the street?”

But what may pass for sporty chic on a Victoria’s Secret model sipping a post-workout shake at Equinox might not have quite the same charm on a professional who squeezed in a Spin class before a meeting . . . with little time for an outfit change. “You do not see people in Paris walking around in their gym clothes—it’s not seen as appropriate,” points out Live The Process designer Robyn Berkley, who also works as a brand consultant for lines such as The Elder Statesman and Sophia Webster. In a color palette of nudes, taupes, heather grays, dark blues, and charcoals, and muted patterns, the label’s signature pieces include a high-waisted pant and corset bra that are designed to be seamlessly integrated into your wardrobe. “I didn’t want people to look at me knowing I was in my gym clothes,” says Berkley.

Hijab-Wearing Model Means for Muslim Women

NBC Today recently reported on the momentum of the modesty movement, DKNY made a splash as they announced their Ramadan collection, The New York Times took notice of the hijab fashion boom cropping up on Instagram and then–this happened. Gasp. A Muslim hijab-wearing model in a mainstream fashion ad. (Excuse me as I pick my jaw up off the ground).
But I can't say that I'm entirely surprised. Just take a look at the Instagram pages of Ascia AKF, Dian Pelangi, and Dina Tokio, to name a few. These influencers are huge, amassing millions of followers. These bloggers and designers (myself included) are impacting a whole new generation of women around the world by reclaiming the narrative via social media and illustrating what a veiled Muslim woman looks like in 2018.

Brands are finally taking note of what I've been advocating since I founded the fashion brand Haute Hijab in 2010–that Muslims (in this case Muslim women) are a thriving, fully-functioning and active segment of society who deserve to be acknowledged and heard. It's no wonder Fortune magazine deemed Muslim women as the next big untapped fashion market.

Now let me be clear (mainstream fashion brands, I'm talking to you), the hijab is not a fashion statement. It's a religious garment with deep and profound significance that has roots going back to the Virgin Mary. Wearing this piece of cloth means, "I respect my body and guard my modesty out of devotion to God." It makes some people uncomfortable, because to wear it is to reject the notion that women need to wear less in order to be liberated. The concept of hijab in fact turns that contention on its head–arguing that to cover up is the real liberation from society's ingrained perception that a women's value is reduced to her sexual allure.

And please, the notion that wearing hijab in the West is a form of oppression is so played out. Hijab-wearing Muslim women living in the West are vocal, smart, and empowered–not different than any other collective of women. You may have watched Amanda Saab compete on this past season's Master Chef while donning hijab, or maybe you've heard of Lena Khan, writer and director of The Tiger Hunter featuring some Hollywood heavyweights due out later this year. Or how about Ibtihaj Muhammad, star fencer looking to bring home the gold for Team USA at the 2019 Olympics? Muslim women who wear hijab are more present than ever.

This past July, I attended a roundtable in Italy on modest fashion alongside other major players in the Islamic fashion industry sponsored by Thomas Reuters and the Global Islamic Economic Summit. Questions regarding regulation, Islamic finance, and the definition of "Islamic" fashion were among the issues discussed. One notion was made clear–Muslim consumers do not want to be force-fed. Yes, it's great that Tommy Hilfiger, Zara, and Mango are now offering lines specifically devoted to the Ramadan season–but to couple that effort with seductive ads of women showing too much skin means they've missed the mark. Yes, the market is lucrative and relatively untapped, but it's also very nuanced and deeply rooted in faith. (Read on for my tips on how to market to the Muslim demographic from Inc.com).
