Beyoncé has had quite a weekend. First, she dropped “Formation,” a single with a pointed message and fierce fashion; then she stole the show with her halftime performance at Super Bowl 50. Dazzling onstage in a custom military-inspired look by Dsquared2 (over an Ashton Michael bodysuit), the superstar was clearly paying homage to what Michael Jackson wore when he sang at Super Bowl XXVII, back in 1993. “He is her biggest musical influence,” said Knowles’s stylist Marni Senofonte in an exclusive interview with Vogue.com’s Marjon Carlos.

February 5, 2019 might go down in history as the day it sank in that the whole fashion system is about to reconfigure. Hot on the heels of Burberry’s announcement that it will be launching a see-now-buy-immediately women’s and men’s show in September, Tom Ford has declared the same thing.

The pleated skirt, first popularized on the runways at Proenza Schouler, Céline, Altuzarra, and Gucci, has become every fashion girl’s best friend. It’s the kind of fail-proof piece that can be worked in a myriad of ways depending on the occasion: buttoned up with a sensible oxford shirt for the office, or zhooshed up for date night with a plunging V-neck top. Victoria Beckham has clearly figured out how to work the look into her winter street style wardrobe and was seen out in New York today wearing a pleated skirt of her own design.

Hedi Slimane’s affinity for musicians is well documented, but rock stars aren’t his only source of inspiration. Sure, music appreciation is a requirement to join Slimane’s cabal of muses, but male models play just as important a role as the frontmen of buzzed-about bands. Whether they’re the handsome sons of Hollywood royalty or the willowy boys he handpicks while street casting, Slimane’s favorites are united by a nonchalant cool that they carry into endeavors far beyond fashion.

Music is integral to Saint Laurent. Since Hedi Slimane’s appointment in 2012, the house has embraced musicians as campaign stars, models, and muses. BB King, Chuck Berry, Joni Mitchell, Marianne Faithfull, Daft Punk, Kim Gordon, and Courtney Love have all posed for the house’s Music Project campaigns, though Slimane is as focused on up-and-coming acts as he is on global superstars. Tonight’s menswear and Pre-Fall concert-cum-runway show at the Palladium in Los Angeles promises performances from a number of California-native bands, including Dylan Lee, the teenage son of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, who is so fresh to the scene, he doesn’t have a song—save the one he created for Saint Laurent—out yet.

Need to Know: After facing tumult in her own life head-on last year, for her sophomore NYFW outing, designer Claudia Li riffed on the idea of self-preservation, of rebirth in the face of hardship. Boasting a background in fine arts, and having cut her teeth as the womenswear designer at J.W.Anderson, New Zealand–raised Li’s minimalism is of a warm stripe. Fall finds her embracing styles with varying sorts of cocoon-like appeal: wide strips of fabric, knotted to armor-like effect; belled sweater cuffs; deep, sculptural folds. If on paper those ideas sound heavy, make no mistake: Li’s got a beautiful eye for lightness. One voile shirtdress you could see becoming a wardrobe staple, while softly fraying cream tulle spilled out from under those flared cashmere sleeves, and long panels added a beautiful sense of movement to the sleeves of a coat in dusty mauve. Where Li will no doubt inspire legions of followers, though, is with her denim. Sourced from both Italy and L.A., here it came whipped into raver-esque mega-flares, a trench, and—most showstoppingly—a jean jacket that bore dramatic, almost Victorian sleeves made up of hundreds on hundreds of bunched indigo yarns.

Michael Kors has always kept things consistent when it comes to his branding. Try as you may, you will never find a piece of Kors imagery that could ever be described as grungy, or weird, or anything less than aspirational and luxurious. The brand’s focus on glamour and excitement has resulted in a constant stream of imagery featuring yachts, Gulfstream planes, vintage cars, and, more often than not, the presence of a staggeringly beautiful blonde. Over the years, names like Sasha Pivovarova and Vanessa Moody have appeared in the designer’s campaigns, but when it comes to the definitive Kors women, it all goes back to two: Carmen Kass and Karmen Pedaru. The elegant Estonian homophones have both served as the face of Michael Kors, representing his ideal across a multitude of product lines and seasons. But who is the ultimate Michael Kors muse? It’s rare to see a big chunky sweater at Narciso Rodriguez, as we did when the second model out emerged in hand-knit black cashmere with a wrap neckline and an asymmetrical hem. Rodriguez is an exacting tailor; his jackets are precision instruments, engineered for a perfect fit. It means that his clothes are quite formal in tone—you don’t wear Narciso to Sunday brunch with the girls. Or at least, you didn’t until now. Rodriguez showed his sweater with an asymmetrical hem silk skirt, but paired with vintage Levi’s it could be just the thing for your weekly ritual green juice and avocado toast.

Since Amal Clooney (née Alamuddin) came onto the scene, she’s gravitated toward a certain ladylike look, and it’s no wonder that she’s made Oscar de la Renta, a brand currently helmed by designer Peter Copping, a go-to. The late great American designer created Clooney’s elegant wedding dress, a look that has influenced countless brides-to-be ever since.

While the bold presence of certain young breakout designers at New York Fashion Week seemed to announce a new progressive, individualistic trajectory for the industry, London has long taken an adventurous, fearless approach to style. From the days of Mary Quant miniskirts to DIY punk to today’s plays on gender and race, trends are meant to be bucked or reimagined altogether. And one of the city’s prominent creative forces, WAH Nails owner Sharmadean Reid, is a testament to this natural-bred flair.
